CLEVELAND Martinez sidelined for 15 days
The rookie catcher and ex-Scrapper is on the disabled list with a sprained ankle.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians rookie catcher Victor Martinez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a badly sprained right ankle and could be sidelined for more than three weeks.
Martinez, a Mahoning Valley Scrapper in 2000, rolled his ankle in the eighth inning of Friday night's game against Anaheim when he appeared to catch his cleats while on the base path between first and second.
Cleveland trainer Paul Spicuzza said Martinez bruised a bone and will probably miss at least three weeks.
"Maybe a little longer," Spicuzza said. "Because of the position, being a catcher, all the weight is on the foot."
Made moves
The Indians made the move between games of a day-night doubleheader against the Angels. Earlier, the club recalled Josh Bard from Triple-A Buffalo to take Martinez's spot.
Infielder Zach Sorensen had been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo about six hours earlier when Bard was recalled by the Indians. But he never left town.
Sorensen was home packing for a Sunday morning flight to join the Bisons in Pawtucket, R.I., when he got the call that the Indians needed him back.
"They called and said, 'Wait a minute, Victor is a little worse off than we thought,' " he said. "You start thinking about new goals at Buffalo, and suddenly you're back here setting new goals."
Arrived in 10th
Sorensen arrived at Jacobs Field in the 10th inning of Cleveland's 3-2 win Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader.
Martinez, considered the best hitter in Cleveland's organization, was hitting .253 with eight RBIs in 30 games since being recalled from Buffalo on June 27.
That was when the Indians sent down Bard to work on his hitting.
Bard was batting just .228 when he left the Indians, but was hitting .330 with five homers and 21 RBIs in 34 games at Buffalo.
"Just swinging at strikes," Bard said when asked what he needed to improve upon. "I'm excited about getting another chance to get back in the game at this level and show I can play."
