AMERICAN LEAGUE Indians sweep pair by 3-2 scores
Angel Santos and Ryan Ludwick lifted the Tribe past the Angels.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- By the time day rolled into night, an Angel had beaten the Angels, a pitcher turned two by himself, and Danys Baez had been forgiven.
Saturday at Jacobs Field was anything but an ordinary day at the ballpark.
Rookie Angel Santos homered and Cleveland's Jason Boyd became the first pitcher to record an unassisted double play in 13 years, leading the Indians to a 3-2 win and a sweep of Anaheim in a day-night doubleheader.
The Indians won the opener by an identical score on rookie Ryan Ludwick's RBI single over a five-man infield in the 13th, four innings after Baez blew a 2-0 lead with another ninth-inning implosion.
"That was the toughest day of my career," said Baez, who dined with teammates between games at a nearby Mexican restaurant. "I'm glad it's all over."
First sweep since 1999
Santos, who came in with a .176 average, connected for his second homer with two outs in the seventh off Scot Shields (2-3) as the Indians completed their first doubleheader sweep since 1999.
Santos was one of the players who ate with Baez.
"I think it was good food, man," he said.
Boyd (3-1) pitched 22/3 hitless innings, David Riske worked a perfect eighth and Baez, who seven blown saves this season, had a rare 1-2-3 ninth for his 25th save.
In the opener, Baez gave up two runs on two doubles, a single and a wild pitch in a painful ninth.
"That was crazy," said Baez, referring to the inning and summing up much of the day. "It was important for me to come back strong. I am the closer and so I have to be ready."
Boyd was.
After replacing starter Jason Stanford in the fifth, the right-hander completed his unique double play to end the sixth.
With Adam Kennedy at third, Alfredo Amezaga attempted a squeeze bunt but popped it up in front of the plate to Boyd, who caught it and raced to third to double up Kennedy.
Boyd's solo double play was the first by a pitcher since Detroit's Clay Parker on Aug. 10, 1990. It hasn't been done in the NL since Jim McAndrew of the New York Mets in 1968.
Anderson connects
Anaheim's Garret Anderson slapped a run-scoring single to left in the fifth to tie it 2-2 and chase Stanford, who was making his fourth career start.
Casey Blake's two-run double gave the Indians a 2-1 lead in the third off Shields.
The Angels hit several hard shots foul off Stanford, who was fortunate to get out of the first down only 1-0 after Scott Spiezio's RBI single.
In the day game, Ludwick came to the plate with the odds -- and Anaheim's infield -- stacked against him.
He was is an 0-for-10 slump -- seven strikeouts -- before hitting his single to left-center over a five-man infield to score Jhonny Peralta as the Indians ended a seven-game losing streak against the Angels at the Jake.
Game-winning run
Peralta opened the 13th with a slow roller off Ben Weber (2-1) that he beat out for an infield single and was given second when third baseman Amezaga's throw skipped into the stands.
John McDonald sacrificed before Angels manager Mike Scioscia pulled out all the stops to keep it tied.
Scioscia brought left fielder Quinlan in to play first and moved Spiezio over to second. He then scooted three infielders to the left side, leaving only outfielders in center and left.
"We've done it a bunch of times," said Scioscia, who then had Weber intentionally walk Coco Crisp and Jody Gerut to load the bases and face Ludwick, who guessed the Angels would give him a chance to win it.
"They struck me out four times last night, so I wasn't surprised," Ludwick said. "I choked up and told myself I'm not going to strike out. Even if I broke the bat, I was going to put the ball in play."
Jack Cressend (1-0) pitched two innings for his first win since Oct. 6., 2001, for Minnesota.
