Donovan's goal gives Earthquakes 1-0 conquest
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Landon Donovan scored in the 23rd minute Friday night to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards.
Frank Yallop earned his 36th coaching victory with San Jose, moving him past Brian Quinn for the team record.
Donovan, playing his first MLS game since July 2 because of national team commitments, controlled a crossing pass from Brian Mullan three yards from the left post. Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola saved Donovan's first shot, but Donovan put the rebound into the net.
The Earthquakes (9-3-6) have a league-high 33 points.
Nearly tied game
Kansas City (7-5-6) nearly tied the game in the 58th minute when forward Igor Simutenkov controlled a long ball from substitute Diego Gutierrez behind the Earthquakes defense. But San Jose goalkeeper Pat Onstad made a diving save on Simutenkov's right-footed shot.
