Couch gets start in Browns' exhibition opener
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Tim Couch will start for the Cleveland Browns in their preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans.
Browns coach Butch Davis had been secretive about whether Couch or Kelly Holcomb would start against the Titans on Saturday night. Davis ended a week of mystery with Friday's announcement.
The quarterbacks have been battling for Cleveland's starting job since training camp opened last month.
Davis decided to have an open competition for the job after Holcomb, filling in for an injured Couch, passed for 429 yards in an opening-round playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Couch started last week's scrimmage against Buffalo and went 8-for-13 for 79 yards and one touchdown. Holcomb, playing mainly against the Bills' No. 2 defense, finished 12-of-16 for 164 yards and two TDs.
