BROWNS Couch selected to start tonight

Coach Butch Davis gave Tim Couch the nod at quarterback against the Titans.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Browns coach Butch Davis ended a week of mystery and guessing games Friday by naming Tim Couch his starting quarterback for Cleveland's exhibition opener tonight at Tennessee.
Davis had been secretive about whether Couch or Kelly Holcomb would start against the Titans.
The two QBs have been battling for Cleveland's starting job since training camp opened last month.
Davis decided to have an open competition for the job after Holcomb, filling in for an injured Couch, passed for 429 yards in an opening-round AFC playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Started against Bills
Couch also started last week's scrimmage against the Buffalo Bills, and went 8-for-13 for 79 yards and one touchdown. Holcomb, playing mainly against the Bills' No. 2 defense, finished 12-of-16 for 164 yards and two TDs.
Earlier this week, Davis said no conclusions should be drawn from who he picks to start against the Titans.
He reiterated that in a statement Friday and said the decisions on who will start during the preseason were made before training camp opened.
"Our training camp practices, last week's scrimmage with Buffalo, and each preseason game are all important parts of our evaluation for many players at many positions," he said.
The Browns will host the Green Bay Packers next Friday in their second preseason game.
Davis has said he will name his starter for the regular season before the Aug. 23 exhibition game in Detroit.
