WNBA Liberty's road loss streak continues against Sting



The New York team has lost nzine staight after a 65-54 loss at Charlotte.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The New York Liberty are having all sorts of problems away from home.
The Liberty lost their ninth straight road game, and fell to sixth place in the Eastern Conference, with a 65-54 loss to the Charlotte Sting on Thursday night.
The Sting made 19-of-22 free throws while outrebounding the Liberty 33-20.
"Being on the road we need to learn about getting a run of our own," Liberty guard Teresa Weatherspoon said. "As hard as we work, we've got to get some calls and get to the line."
Leading the way
Rushia Brown scored 14 points and Andrea Stinson had 13 as the Sting (15-12) pulled away from New York and retained sole possession of second place in the East. Dawn Staley also scored 12 points for Charlotte.
Brown scored on a post move with 3:04 remaining to stop a Liberty rally and keep Charlotte ahead 54-46.
Charlotte played aggressively, but New York only went to the line eight times in the game, and not once in the first half.
"When you're trying to run an offense, it's hard when there is holding and grabbing," said Liberty coach Richie Adubato, called for a technical foul in the second half. "When you let that play go, it becomes a football game."
Vickie Johnson scored 16 points, Tari Phillips 13 and Tamika Whitmore 12 for New York (11-14).
Charlotte went on a 12-2 run in the second half to take a 47-37 lead, highlighted by Tammy Sutton-Brown's three-point play.
The Liberty committed 15 turnovers and were outrebounded 33-20 while seeing their two-game winning streak snapped.
Comets 68, Fever 55
Sheryl Swoopes scored 16 points, Michelle Snow added 14 and Tina Thompson had 13 for Houston (17-9).
Tamika Catchings had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Fever (13-13), while Natalie Williams had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Before the game, the Fever put Stephanie White on the injured list with a pinched nerve in her lower back and activated guard Niele Ivey.
Monarchs 86, Silver Stars 61
DeMya Walker and Ruthie Bolton each scored 13 points and Sacramento (15-13) kept its playoff hopes alive with a victory at San Antonio.
Yolanda Griffith added 12 points, Kara Lawson 11, and Tangela Smith 10 for the Monarchs, who set a franchise record by shooting 60 percent from the field (36-for-60).
Gwen Jackson scored 15 points for San Antonio (9-19), which lost its third straight game.
