HELOISE Try these hints to remove 'Picasso's' work of art

Dear Heloise: My 5-year-old daughter thinks she is Picasso, but my living-room wall was her canvas. Please help -- how do I remove the crayon marks?
I tried washing the walls with a sponge and warm soap and water, but to no avail. I hate to paint the walls, but if I have to, I will. Hopefully you can give me the answer. A reader, via e-mail
Let's try to get the crayon off! Spray lubricating oil on a paper towel -- not directly on the wall -- and rub it over the stain. You might have to do it several times. Also, dry-cleaning solvent (which you can buy in the grocery store or in a shoe-repair shop) might work. Do the same with that -- on a cloth first, then rub it on the wall.
Finally, pour a bit of baking soda on a damp sponge and gently rub the stain in a circular motion. Rinse the sponge, squeeze it almost dry and go over the area again, then dry with a clean cloth. If this doesn't work and you decide to paint, don't paint directly on the marks -- they will bleed through. You must prime the area first. Heloise
Fast facts: Do you have two or three of the same kinds of photos and you don't know what to do with them? Here are a few ideas:
UGlue them to cardboard and cut them into puzzle pieces.
UUse the backs of photos as postcards.
UGlue onto a fancy box, then paint over them with clear shellac.
UCut them to fit on refrigerator magnets.
Dear Heloise: A stand-up paper-towel holder can easily be converted to a toilet-tissue holder by removing the top knob and stacking extra rolls of tissue on the center post.
The one I have will hold three extra rolls of toilet tissue, and by keeping it replenished, I never run out of tissue in the bathroom. It's convenient and takes up little space. Ms. D.D. Watson, Oxford, N.C.
Dear Heloise: My foyer was too dim for anyone coming in from outside. Since fluorescent bulbs now come in a variety of attractive shapes and are economical enough to leave on, I use one in a very low-wattage round globe -- which looks good in a small lamp without a shade. The lamp is placed atop a narrow bookcase, with a wall mirror directly behind it so I get two lights for the price of one. Where I can, I use mirrors and lights together throughout the house. Sound off: Please, please, clothing manufacturers, stop sewing those darn care labels on the backs of necklines on babies' clothing. There are so many places they could be sewn on that wouldn't irritate tender skin. How about the seam on the underside of a sleeve? Sheila W., Rapid City, S.D.
