Patteson selectedfor Pan Am Games
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State sophomore Tiffany Patteson was named to the Canadian national softball team and selected to represent her country at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Canadian National Team began play against Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
Patteson, who was first selected as an alternate, received the call to the national team and joined the squad for opening ceremonies on Aug. 1.
A first-team All-Horizon League selection, Patteson led the Penguins with a .325 batting average, including a .379 average against Horizon League foes, and ranked fourth in the nation in triples per game.
The Guelph, Ontario, native also set the YSU single-season and career triples records with nine three-base hits in 2003. The left-handed hitting shortstop collected 10 doubles and three home runs for a slugging percentage of .548.
Patteson helped YSU to a school-best record of 36-17-1.

Chicago eliminatesJolly Joe's, 13-11
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Chicago scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning as it edged Jolly Joe's of the Class AA League 13-11 Tuesday in the All-American Amateur Baseball Association World Series at the University of Pitt-Johnstown.
Jolly Joe's, which got a double and four singles from Gary Hinkson, was eliminated in the double elimination event. Jason Savage and Shane Davis each had three hits, while Mark Nightingale had a pair of doubles.
Football officialsmeeting is mandatory
CANFIELD -- The Ohio High School Athletic Association's state football rules interpretation meeting for Youngstown's local association is Thursday at 7 p.m. at Canfield High's auditorium.
Attendance is mandatory for all football officials as well as a representative from each school. Officials are encouraged to bring the attendance card received in their 2003 rules packet. Directions to the school can be viewed at www.ohsaa.org.
Valley Sting Purple33rd in World Series
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Valley Sting Purple 14U fastpitch softball team recently competed in the NSA World Series and finished 33rd out of 107 teams.
The South Florida Lady Raiders defeated the Sting 3-0 in the first pool game, but the Sting bounced back with a 6-0 win over the South Bend Blitz (Indiana), who went on to finish third overall.
Markie Pozzuto of Mecca pitched a three-hitter against Blitz.
In their first elimination game, Sting earned a 4-3 victory over The Force of South Carolina as Colleen Courtney of Boardman ripped a single to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ashley Conger of Poland added three hits for Sting. A combined pitching effort by Catilyn Youngs of Fowler and Pozzuto secured the victory.
The second elimination game featured a Sting comeback from a 3-0 deficit to Grand Slam, Ohio. Pozzuto and Youngs combined to pitch the Sting win.
Sting's first elimination loss came when they dropped a 1-0 decision to the Cooper City Cobras of Florida in the bottom of the second extra inning. Pozzuto pitched seven shutout innings against the Cobras.
Sting was eliminated by the Twilight Maniacs of Florida, 7-0.
Sting Purple's final record for the 2003 season was 66-10, with eight tournament titles.

New pitcherleads Aeros
AKRON -- Kenny Rayborn, making his first start for Akron, held Erie to one earned run in 52/3 innings as the Aeros beat the Seawolves 4-2 Tuesday night in Eastern League action.
Rayborn (1-0), 28, a right-hander signed by the Cleveland Indians out of Jackson of the independent Central League, gave up six hits, walking two and striking out three.
Jose Vargas pitched a perfect ninth to earn his seventh save.
Adrian Burnside (1-3), who took the loss, gave up three runs, all earned, on seven hits in six innings.
Akron was led by Corey Smith, who had RBI doubles in the first and seventh.
