YANKEE LAKE Elections panel complaint: Mayor lives outside village
Mayors are required to live in the village they represent.
YANKEE LAKE -- This village is so small, even the mayor moved away.
Mayor John Jurko actually lives in Brookfield, outside limits of the 99-person village, says a complaint filed with the Trumbull County Board of Elections. The board scheduled a hearing for Aug. 28.
Jurko already has called the board of elections offices, however, and said he plans to resign, board officials say.
Mayors are required to live in the village or city they represent.
The Yankee Lake address Jurko lists on voter registration forms and board of elections paper work is actually the address of the Yankee Lake Inn, where he works. His telephone book listing is also for the inn.
Property records at the Trumbull County Auditor's Office, however, show that he has owned a home on Brookwood Drive, Brookfield, since November 2002.
Jurko's wife is registered to vote at the Brookfield address, said Norma Williams, elections board director.
He was appointed mayor in May 2001. His term was to expire at the end of the year.
Jurko could not be reached.
