Salem cleanup funds

Salem cleanup funds
SALEM -- City council has appropriated about $10,000 extra to cover the citywide cleanup.
The appropriation, approved by council Tuesday, will come from the council contingency fund and bring to nearly $25,000 the total cost of the cleanup, which was recently completed.
The project, which entails curbside pickup of household junk, went over the original $15,000 estimate for two reasons, said Councilwoman Mary Lou Popa, D-1st.
It's been two years since a cleanup was held, and people who don't live in the city brought items in and left them on city streets, Popa said.

Spectacular crash
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said alcohol and high speed were the key factors in a crash on Pa. Route 318 in Lackawannock Township that left two men with minor injuries.
Police said Timothy S. Burns, 38, of Landfill Road, Grove City, was driving at a high rate of speed about 8 p.m. Monday when his pickup truck spun around, rolled over several times and came to rest, trapping Burns and a passenger, Christopher A. Burns, 19, of R.D. 1, Ellwood City, inside.
A passer-by pulled the two from the vehicle, but they ran into a wooded area to hide, police said, adding that they were located about 12 hours later.
Alcohol played a role in the crash, police said.

Child-porn sentence
WAYNESBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A former state police trooper convicted of downloading child pornography from the Internet onto a state police computer has been sentenced to nine to 18 months in jail and must register as a sex offender.
Former Cpl. John R. Mason, 40, of Aliquippa, Beaver County, was sentenced Tuesday for his March 27 conviction on 20 counts of sexual abuse of children and 18 counts of criminal use of a communications facility.
Prosecutors said that between Feb. 21 and Aug. 17, 2000, Mason downloaded three movie files and more than 500 photographs of young boys nude or engaged in sexual acts.
Other images were found on his home computer.
State police internal affairs officers began investigating Mason in 1999 after Mason's wife brought the family's computer to police, police said.
Mason will begin serving his sentence Sept. 5.
