Motocyclist dies
YOUNGSTOWN -- Aaron M. Tringhese, 25, of Brookfield Avenue, Boardman, was killed just before 11 p.m. Wednesday on the South Side when his motorcycle went off the right side of the road and struck a tree, police said. Tringhese was southbound on Glenwood Avenue near Judson Avenue when the 2003 Yamaha went over the curb, police said. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.
Spending threshold
YOUNGSTOWN -- As of Sept. 26, the spending threshold that requires city council approval or advertised bidding rises by $10,000 per expenditure, to $25,000.
The Ohio Legislature recently raised the spending threshold, and the city's charter dictates following state law.
Increasing the spending threshold, to cut the amount of red tape required for purchasing, recently was a topic before the city charter review commission.
Firearms law violation
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Dion J. Matthews, 27, of Elberen Street, charging him with a federal firearms law violation. Matthews is charged with possessing a firearm after being convicted of a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence. The case was investigated by Youngstown Police and by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Town hall meetings
U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland of Lisbon, D-6th, will have two town hall meetings next week to talk with residents about the prescription drug program for Medicare recipients recently passed in Congress.
The meetings will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at East Liverpool's Westgate Elementary School, 810 W. Eighth St., and at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Boardman Township Government Center, 8299 Market St. Boardman Township Government Center, 8299 Market St.
Dearborn Street to close
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dearborn Street at Sarah Street will close Friday and remain closed for about 30 days during construction of the state Route 711 connector, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced. ODOT also announced the reopening of the intersection of state Route 534 and West Pine Lake Road in Goshen Township, which had been closed during a $610,000 road realignment.
Easter Seals garage sale
WARREN -- The 16th annual Easter Seals garage sale is going on through Sunday at the Ridgeview Plaza, 2480 Youngstown Road S.E.
This year's event includes a Pizza Burn-Off & amp; Car Show from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is $5 per adult and $3 per child, which includes a pizza ticket to taste and judge your favorite pizza and one free drink.
There is a $10 entry fee to participate in the car show, which will include one free pizza ticket.
Proceeds from the garage sale and events go to Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Six-lane stadium track
LOWELLVILLE -- During a special meeting Wednesday, the village board of education agreed to have specifications drawn up for a six-lane track that will be built at the football stadium.
The track will be around the field inside the bleachers and is expected to be completed in time for the spring track season, said Superintendent Richard J. Buchenic.
Specifications for the project should be complete within the next two weeks, he added; it will be put out to bid within the next four to six weeks.
Missing car, broken door
CANFIELD -- A woman feeding cats for a friend in the 6700 block of Crory Road discovered Wednesday that the door of the attached garage had been kicked in and a 2003 Polaris 4-wheeler worth $8,000 was missing, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department.
Flooding funding gone
WARREN -- Funds for two Trumbull County Jobs and Family Services programs to help flooding victims were used up within 24 hours of the programs' being announced, TCJFS director Thomas Mahoney said.
The department will take applications through the end of the week from families who need assistance to fix damage or replace household items in the hope that more money will be appropriated from the state.
Additional money is also available from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, by calling (800) 621-3362.
More than 450 people filled out applications for local TVJFS services.
The $50,000 available for the elderly was gone within an hour and $200,000 for poor families was gone by last Thursday.
