California trio leads at women's amateur
GLADWYNE, Pa. (AP) -- Irene Cho, Jane Park and Sarah Huarte -- all Californians -- led the field with 2-under 69s after the first round of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Philadelphia Country Club.
The round, which began Monday at the 6,368-yard, par-71 course, was completed Tuesday afternoon after rain forced three stoppages Monday. The second round was halted Tuesday because of a thunderstorm.
Following completion of the second round, the field of 156 players will be cut to 64 for match play. The championship concludes with a 36-hole final Sunday.
Thirteen-year-old Michelle Wie was tied for 16th place with a 2-over 73 after one round. Wie, a 6-footer from Honolulu, last month became the youngest player to win a USGA title for adults at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links.
