TRUMBULL COUNTY Howland man receives more time in prison for stabbing fellow inmate

WARREN -- A 23-year-old Howland man had six months added to his prison sentence after pleading guilty to aggravated assault for stabbing another inmate at an alternative sentencing program.
A judge in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court sentenced John Neilan in October 1999 to five years in prison after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of Fred W. Wilkerson of Howland in 1998.
Judge John Stuard granted Neilan early release in January, but the judge ordered him to spend six months in the Northeast Ohio Community Alternative Program and six months on house arrest.
In June, another NEOCAP inmate accused Neilan of stabbing him seven times with a fork, and Neilan was charged with felonious assault.
Last week, the judge reimposed the prison sentence, meaning Neilan will serve the remaining time of his sentence, about a year, in prison.
He pleaded guilty Monday before Judge Peter Kontos on a charge of aggravated assault, which was reduced from felonious assault.
The judge sentenced him to six months in jail, which will be tacked onto the one year left of his original sentence.
