HUBBARD TOWNSHIP Trustees approve measures to fix and prevent damage from floods
HUBBARD -- Township road crews are continuing to collect debris from recent floods now that trustees have approved more overtime.
Heavy rains in recent weeks have washed away roads, downed trees and flooded homes throughout the township.
Trustee Fred Hanley said trustees met in special session Monday and approved several items to help recovery, including the overtime.
Trustees also awarded a contract to Gennaro Pavers of Warren to repair a section of Drummond Avenue Extension that was washed away last week by high waters.
Creek concerns
Hanley said road crews also noticed heavy debris in Little Yankee Run Creek, which runs from Interstate 80 in the township along North Main Street into the city.
"We sent a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers, asking them to come in and perform immediate dredging of the creek," he said.
Trustees also are asking the corps to examine the old Youngstown Sheet & amp; Tube Co. dam. Although the dam is in the city limits, the township experiences flooding when the creek overflows there.
Trustees also reached a settlement with Ohio Risk Management to cover some of the costs incurred when a township police car was washed away in last weekend's flood.
Hanley said the settlement of $7,400 will cover a portion of replacing the car.
To cover remaining costs, trustees will petition the Federal Emergency Management Agency because the area was declared a national disaster area.
The declaration allows municipalities and other entities up to 75 percent reimbursement from the federal government for damage.
