Army band to performa tribute to troops
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 338th Army Band will perform patriotic tunes as a tribute to U.S. troops and their families at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Morley Pavilion in Mill Creek Park.
The 40-member Columbus-based band features musicians from all over Ohio.
The band will be here as part of its "Tribute to Freedom Tour" of Ohio cities.
The pavilion is in the park's Wick Recreation Area at Belle Vista Avenue and McCollum Road.
Decorative pond tour
CANFIELD -- Thirty-one Mahoning and Trumbull County homeowners will open their yards to the public Aug. 16 and 17 in the third annual tour of decorative ponds.
The drive-it-yourself tour is sponsored by the Mahoning and Trumbull County soil and water conservation districts and Colonial Gardens, each of which have tour books available for $5. Tour proceeds benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Summer Enrichment Program for Handicapped Children of Trumbull County. For more information, call (330) 533-2231.
Tampering case
YOUNGSTOWN -- Charges of tampering with records and theft of legal papers filed against Melvin T. Dixon Jr. at Mahoning County court in Boardman have been bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury, said Margaret Micco, clerk of court. Dixon, 19, of East Indianola Avenue, is accused of taking from Boardman court his file, which contains his driving under suspension case. A pretrial on the DUS is set for Sept. 15. The file was found during a traffic stop in Youngstown on July 29. Dixon was arrested that day and charged with DUS. A pretrial is set for Aug. 14 in municipal court. Dixon, convicted of gun charge, has been on probation to a municipal court judge since March.
Meeting canceled
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners have canceled their meeting scheduled for Thursday afternoon because two of the three are on vacation. Their next meeting date has yet to be announced.
Attempted murder charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Charges of attempted murder and felonious assault against a Youngstown teen were bound over Tuesday to a Mahoning County grand jury from municipal court. Ralph Muldrow, 18, of Shehy Street is accused of shooting Edward P. Watson, 20, and Paul C. Jackson, 37, whose addresses were not available. Jackson was treated for a gunshot to his left forearm. Watson, who was hit in the lower right side and back, remained in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center. The shootings took place July 22 on Cameron Avenue. At the time, Muldrow was on probation for a gun conviction.
Shots fired into duplex
CAMPBELL -- Someone fired shots into half of a duplex in the 200 block of Hyatt Avenue.
According to police, a neighbor heard gunshots about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police reported finding two bullet holes in the unit and two in the backyard shed.
No one was at the unit when it was hit.
Someone had also broken windows in the unit over the weekend.
Cemetery cleanup
MINERAL RIDGE -- David Pugh, Weathersfield Township administrator, has announced that grave flowers and decorations in Kerr Cemetery must be cleaned up before next week.
Those that are not attended to will be cleaned by township crews.
New voting system
WARREN -- The punch-card voting machines used in Trumbull County will soon be replaced with an electronic, touch-screen system made by Diebold Inc. of North Canton.
Federal law requires the new machines to be in use throughout the county by Feb. 1, 2004, said Lyn Augustine, deputy director of the board of elections.
The federal government is covering the entire cost of buying the machines, she said.
The board plans to test the new voting machines in one small community, perhaps Southington, in the November election, she said.
