WASHINGTON -- Lisa Harrison made one of two free throws with 20.7 seconds remaining. Anna DeForge led the Mercury (5-19) with 14 points, while Kayte Christensen had 13. Reserve center Tuvic Slobodanka gave the Mercury a 69-67 lead with 52 seconds remaining, but Jocelyn Penn drove the lane to tie it at 69 with 38 seconds to go. Then Harrison was fouled and made one free throw to give the Mercury the lead back. Penn then missed the final shot for Washington.
She finished with a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench, and Aiysha Smith added 10 points. Washington (6-20) played without Chamique Holdsclaw, who injured her neck Friday night against Connecticut.
Guard Coco Miller, the team's second-leading scorer, saw limited action with an ankle injury.
Connecticut 66, Indiana 55
UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Nykesha Sales scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half to lead Connecticut. The Sun moved past the Fever into third place in the Eastern Conference with eight games remaining. Indiana battled back several times and took a 52-51 lead on Kristen Rasmussen's 3-pointer with 4:21 remaining. But the Sun closed with a 15-3 run in the final 2:41 to put the Fever away.
Shannon Johnson scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half, and had eight assists and six rebounds for Connecticut (14-12). Tamika Catchings had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Fever (13-12).
Monarchs 76, Sting 60
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Kara Lawson, Tangela Smith and DeMya Walker each scored 15 points as Sacramento won its fourth straight.
Ticha Penicheiro had nine points and nine assists for the Monarchs, who have won seven of eight since interim coach John Whisenant replaced the fired Maura McHugh. Sacramento, in fifth place in the Western Conference at 14-12, moved to a half-game behind third-place Minnesota and Seattle -- both 14-11. Andrea Stinson led Charlotte (14-12) with 21 points as the Sting lost for the third time in four games.
