Homeowners foilburglaries in Liberty
LIBERTY -- Alert homeowners foiled two burglary attempts early today on Colonial Drive.
Homeowners at 994 and 985 Colonial Drive each reported to police they heard someone enter their homes and begin rummaging around downstairs around 4 a.m. today. In each case, homeowners identified themselves and the burglars fled.
Officers were unable to find any suspects in the area.
15-year-old fugitiveis again in custody
GIRARD -- A 15-year-old who escaped from the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center is back in custody.
Police searched a home on Smithsonian Drive around 2 p.m. Saturday and found the teenage boy hiding in the basement. He was taken to the city jail until deputy sheriffs could take him back to JJC. Reports said that while in custody, the boy tried to use his shirt and hands to strangle himself, though he suffered no injuries.
Police arrest 2in store break-in
WARREN -- Two homeless men were arrested Sunday and accused of breaking a plate glass window at Mickey's Army-Navy Store with a rock and trying to steal $459 worth of merchandise, mostly men's clothes.
Officers arriving at the store at 5:20 p.m., a few minutes after an alarm was tripped, found George Peace, 35, and Bruce Dixon, 46, leaving through the broken window, reports say. They face charges of breaking and entering.
Cows hit the roadthen fade into night
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Shenango Township Police said they don't know where cows that were running around on Pa. Route 60 near the Interstate 80 interchange came from. They also don't know where they went.
Police Chief Ron Preston said officers chased them between 9 and 10 p.m. Saturday and the cows disappeared into a wooded area.
Speculation is that they escaped from a local farm, but no one had reported any missing cattle as of this morning. Preston said the cows may have startled motorists, but none was hit.
Niles sexual assault
NILES -- A Royal Mall woman told police a 16-year-old boy sexually assaulted another juvenile in one of the apartments.
Reports said the assault took place at 3:45 a.m. Saturday, but no other details were available.
Teachers' contract
NILES -- Niles Classroom Teachers Association and the board of education have reached a one-year addendum/agreement to their contract.
The teachers union ratified the agreement Sunday afternoon, and board members met in special session that evening to approve the contract. Details were to be released later today.
Free concert in Vienna
VIENNA -- Musician Alex Bevan will perform a free concert at the gazebo in Vienna Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. It is sponsored by Vienna VFW Post 3521. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
Weathersfield schools
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Board of Education will meet in special session at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the board office. The board will vote on a 9.5-mill, five-year emergency levy to be placed on the November ballot, schools Superintendent Rocco Adduci said.
Man's house shot up
YOUNGSTOWN -- A disabled man told police his house in the 300 block of West Princeton Avenue was shot up sometime Sunday night while he was away. Police discovered a bullet hole in the front door and the storm door glass shattered.
The bullet also damaged the floor. Police found several intoxicated witnesses at the house who gave conflicting statements as to what happened, reports show.
Television theft
SALEM -- A woman who lives in the 1000 block of Pershing Street says someone stole a 25-inch television and a videocassette recorder.
The theft was reported around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Bicycles stolen
SALEM -- Three bicycles were stolen from a home in the 600 block of Woodland Avenue, police said.
The crime is believed to have occurred sometime after dark Thursday. It was reported around 11:35 a.m. Friday.
