AROUND THE HORN Sunday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Athletics 2, Yankees 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Miguel Tejada hit a two-run double off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning, ruining Andy Pettitte's one-hit performance with his second game-ending hit in three days. Mark Mulder (15-7) pitched a five-hitter but seemed headed for defeat until Pettitte was removed after walking Mark Ellis to start the ninth.
Eric Chavez moved Ellis to third with a one-out single off Rivera (5-1), then Tejada launched a drive off the elevated wall in deep left field, driving home Ellis and Chavez.
Mariners 8, White Sox 2
SEATTLE -- Ichiro Suzuki and Edgar Martinez each hit a two-run single in a six-run fifth inning as Seattle snapped Mark Buehrle's seven-game winning streak. Gil Meche (12-7) won despite throwing 116 pitches in five innings.
Royals 2, Devil Rays 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jimmy Gobble pitched into the seventh inning in his major league debut, and Aaron Guiel hit an inside-the-park homer. Guiel hit Kansas City's second inside-the-park shot of the series, and Joe Randa was 2-for-4 with a home run. Gobble (1-0), called up from Double-A Wichita on Saturday, gave up six hits in six-plus innings. Jeremy Affeldt threw two perfect innings for his first career save.
Red Sox 7, Orioles 5
BALTIMORE -- David Ortiz hit two of Boston's six home runs, and the Red Sox halted a four-game losing streak. Doug Mirabelli, Johnny Damon,
Trot Nixon and Bill Mueller also connected for Boston. Tim Wakefield (9-5) allowed three runs in 52/3 innings to become the ninth pitcher to win 100 games with the Red Sox. The knuckleballer won his third straight start.
Twins 7, Tigers 2
MINNEAPOLIS -- Johan Santana pitched six solid innings for his first win since moving into Minnesota's starting rotation, and Shannon Stewart homered. Santana (5-3) had been 0-2 in four starts since replacing Joe Mays in the rotation on July 11. He gave up Bobby Higginson's two-run homer and five hits, striking out seven.
Blue Jays 4, Angels 0
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Kelvim Escobar (7-6), the subject of trade rumors last week, gave up six hits in 81/3 innings. He struck out four, walked four and won for only the second time in nine starts. Bobby Kielty hit an RBI double, and Orlando Hudson had a two-run single.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Dodgers 8, Braves 4
ATLANTA -- Robin Ventura chugged around the bases for the first inside-the-park homer of his career and Los Angeles handed Russ Ortiz his first loss since June 13. Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer as Los Angeles snapped a five-game losing streak. On Ventura's drive to the left-center gap in the seventh,
Darren Bragg jumped against the wall attempting a backhanded catch. The ball popped loose as he turned his glove and crashed into the padding. Sitting on the ground,
Bragg snagged the ball with his bare hand before it struck the ground, holding it for the umpires to see.
But umpire Jeff Kellogg, running out from his position at second base, ruled that the ball had struck the wall. Bragg tried to flip the ball to left fielder Chipper Jones, but it sailed over his head.
Ventura never stopped running, sliding across home before the Braves could retrieve the ball and throw home.
Padres 5, Phillies 2, 10 innings
PHILADELPHIA -- Brian Buchanan hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning and Oliver Perez struck out 13.
Pat Burrell homered for the Phillies. Philadelphia set a season high by striking out 17 times, with Perez getting most of them in just seven innings.
Mets 13, Cardinals 5
NEW YORK -- Switch-hitter Tony Clark homered from both sides of the plate and drove in five runs to help Jeremy Griffiths earn his first major league victory.
The Mets set a season high for runs and hits in ending a three-game losing streak. Clark, Jason Phillips and Cliff Floyd each had three of New York's 19 hits.
Albert Pujols doubled in the eighth for the Cardinals, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games. Bo Hart led off the game with his second homer in two days.
Astros 3, Marlins 1
MIAMI -- Knuckleballer Jared Fernandez made a successful debut for Houston, combining with three relievers on a five-hitter. Fernandez, recalled Friday from Triple-A New Orleans, allowed one run and three hits in 51/3 innings.
Orlando Merced hit his second home run of the season for Houston.
Expos 4, Brewers 2
MONTREAL -- Livan Hernandez pitched seven innings and four Expos hit RBI singles as Montreal extended its winning streak to four.
Hernandez (11-7) scattered five hits and allowed only Royce Clayton's solo homer in the fourth.
Vladimir Guerrero, Brad Wilkerson, Endy Chavez and Orlando Cabrera hit run-scoring singles for Montreal.
Cubs 2, Diamondbacks 1
CHICAGO -- Sammy Sosa hit a two-run homer and Matt Clement pitched three-hit ball for eight innings. It was Sosa's 24th homer this season and the 523rd of his career.
Sosa has 14 home runs since July 1, most in the majors. Except for Luis Gonzalez's solo homer, Clement (9-9) was brilliant. He struck out seven and walked two.
Giants 7, Reds 3
CINCINNATI -- Barry Bonds and Edgardo Alfonzo each drove in two runs, and Dustin Hermanson won in his return to the majors. Hermanson (2-2), called up from Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, allowed two runs and four hits over six innings in his first start since last Aug. 22 for Boston.
