AUSTINTOWN -- A township woman discovered that 100 pieces of jewelry had been stolen from her home.
The West Hampton Drive woman, 60, told township officers that the jewelry, valued at $60 to $90 per piece, was taken sometime between June 7 and Friday, when she filed a police report. The items were taken from four boxes on her bedroom floor, the report shows.
Obstructing justice charge
AUSTINTOWN -- The girlfriend of a felony grand theft suspect faces a misdemeanor obstructing justice charge after she told police the man was not in a township home. Officers searching the home found him hiding in the basement, police reports show.
William Weitzman, 22, was arrested at about 10:36 p.m. Friday at a Woodland Trace Street home on a charge that he failed to appear in court on the felony charge. His girlfriend, Diana Matheney, 19, of Coleman Drive in Youngstown, was issued a summons on the misdemeanor charge.
Police said the woman told them several times that Weitzman was not in the home. Reports list the man as homeless, but a warrant lists him as living at the Woodland Trace address.
Break-ins at school
AUSTINTOWN -- Food and supplies are missing after break-ins at the Woodside School on Elmwood Avenue.
An officer checking the school at about 10:30 p.m. Friday discovered an open door and broken screen on a mobile classroom, and candy and school supplies missing, police reports show.
At about 10 a.m. that day, a school employee had reported an earlier break-in to the trailer, during which food, crayons, glue sticks, markers, colored pencils and name tags were taken, according to police reports.
Burglaries thwarted
LIBERTY -- Alert homeowners foiled two burglary attempts early today on Colonial Drive.
Homeowners at 994 and 985 Colonial Drive reported to police they heard someone enter their homes and begin rummaging around downstairs around 4 a.m. In each case, homeowners identified themselves and the burglars fled.
Officers were unable to find any suspects in the area.
Back in custody
GIRARD -- A 15-year-old who escaped from the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center is back in custody.
Police searched a home on Smithsonian Drive around 2 p.m. Saturday and found the teenage boy hiding in the basement. He was taken to the city jail until deputy sheriffs could take him back to JJC. Reports said that while in custody, the boy tried to use his shirt and hands to strangle himself, though he suffered no injuries.
Man's house shot up
YOUNGSTOWN -- A disabled man told police his house in the 300 block of West Princeton Avenue was shot up sometime Sunday night while he was away. Police discovered a bullet hole in the front door and the storm door glass shattered.
The bullet also damaged the floor. Police found several intoxicated witnesses at the house who gave conflicting statements as to what happened, reports show.
Drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A woman and two men, all from Wintersville, Ohio, were arrested Saturday on drug charges after their car was stopped on North Belle Vista Avenue for having a cracked windshield. Police said the driver, Michael L. Clancey, 33, had needle marks on his arms. He was arrested on charges of permitting drug abuse, possession of drug abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia. Mark D. Rawson, 32, also had needle marks on his arm, police said. Ten packets of suspected heroin were found in his pants pocket and needles in the console, reports show. Rawson faces charges of trafficking in heroin and possession of drug abuse instruments. Lori Clancey, 36, was charged with drug-abuse heroin. The relationship between the Clanceys is not known.
Weathersfield schools
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Board of Education will meet in special session at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the board office. The board will vote on a 9.5-mill, five-year emergency levy to be placed on the November ballot, schools Superintendent Rocco Adduci said.
2 held in store break-in
WARREN -- Two homeless men were arrested Sunday and accused of breaking a plate glass window at Mickey's Army-Navy Store with a rock and trying to steal $459 worth of merchandise, mostly men's clothes. Officers found George Peace, 35, and Bruce Dixon, 46, leaving through the broken window, reports say. They face charges of breaking and entering.
