BRONCOS Hobbling Davis not yet ready to retire

KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- It sounded a lot like a retirement press conference, only Terrell Davis still didn't want to make the announcement official.
Davis stopped by Denver Broncos training camp Saturday and spoke with the media before morning practice. He sounded resigned to the fact he wouldn't play again, but he wanted to wait to make that decision because he said he only wants to officially retire once.
He said he wants to finish rehabbing the left knee he had microfracture surgery on last September that had prevented him from running or even jogging until a few weeks ago. Doctors told him it will take a year to recover from the surgery, and once he's healthy, he said then he'll decide what to do next.
It's not the first time Davis has seemed on the verge of retirement only to keep working at a comeback attempt. It just doesn't seem that he will make it back to the NFL.
"That is the here and now, that's what I'm dealing with, I'm not playing again," Davis said. "That's what I'm tell myself. So if I do play, it will be a bonus. Right now, life goes on, and I've pretty much moved on."
Still hoping
The Broncos released Davis on the eve of training camp, when it was obvious to himself and the team he could not pass a physical. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said when announcing Davis' release that Davis said he would want to come back with the Broncos, but Davis said although he couldn't envision himself playing with another team, he couldn't rule it out.
Davis has been working out with a personal trainer in Phoenix five days a week, and said it isn't for football purposes.
Davis remembered early in his career being around Rod Bernstine when Bernstine was dealing with bad knees, and he didn't see himself ending up in that position.
"Here I am thinking, that's not going to happen to me," Davis said. "I'll take care of my body. I'll get massages, acupunctures, and all that stuff. You think about all those good things you're doing, but in football, you have to have some luck."
