PA. PARKS McConnell's Mill, Moraine Trivia, a geology tour, stargazing and several other programs are slated for this month at McConnell's Mill and Moraine state parks, near Portersville, Pa.
MCCONNELL'S MILL
"Summer Fun at the Old Mill": Parents are welcome to join their kids for this event, which will include stargazing, a campfire and some nature-oriented programs. Space is limited to the first 30 people; those interested in reserving a spot should call (724) 368-9320 and leave their names, phone numbers and the number in their parties. An adult must accompany children under 12, and participants should bring a sleeping bag, blanket, flashlight and table setting. The 141/2-hour program begins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Old Mill.
"Teatime at the Old Mill": A naturalist will discuss natural ingredients found in teas, beginning at 2 p.m. next Sunday in the Kildoo picnic area.
"Stargazing": Beginning at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Kildoo ballfield, a naturalist will teach participants how to read a star chart in advance of the Perseid meteor shower, which starts around 2 the next morning. Those interested in attending should bring a flashlight, blanket and binoculars.
The park also has two half-hour corn-grinding demonstrations, starting at 1 and 3 p.m., as well as two 45-minute grist mill tours that begin at 2 and 4 p.m. Both are on Saturdays and Sundays and are in the Old Mill.
MORAINE
"Who Am I?" This game of trivia will be based on some of Pennsylvania's common plants and animals. The hourlong event starts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pleasant Valley Beach on the South Shore.
"Geology Tour": This free 40-mile tour starts at the park office on the South Shore. Participants will get to take a drive through the park and see much of its geology. Meet at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
