NOTEBOOK | From Cafaro Field
Acting boss: Scrappers manager Ted Kubiak was in Oakland, Calif. at a reunion of players from the Oakland A's 1973 World Series championship team. Chris Bando, who managed the team in 2002, filled in on an interim basis. Kubiak was an infielder with the A's. "He'll be with them for the next couple of days," said Greg Gania, media relations assistant. "He'll join the team up in Auburn."
What attack? The Scrappers had three hits Wednesday and lost 4-3. Friday the Scrappers had three hits and lost 4-2 in 10 innings. That's six hits over 19 innings. "We just need to swing the bats and put the ball in play a little bit more," said Bando. "We'll be facing some good pitching in Auburn so we got to be prepared to score some runs. And, probably get more than 4-5 hits to win a a ball game."
Addition: Infielder Luis Cotto played shortstop Friday after being sent down from Kinston. While with the Kinston Indians, Cotto batted .151 in 152 trips to the plate. He collected 23 hits with four doubles. Against Batavia he went 0-for-3 but was flawless in the field.
Welcome August: The Scrappers went just 11-18 in July to fall 15 games behind first-place Auburn in the Pinckney Division standings. Three doubleheaders and several injuries have taken their toll. -- Bill Sullivan
