Farmers market rules change for permits
FARRELL, Pa. -- Less restrictive rules governing what products can be sold at the Farrell Farmers' Market next to the city building on Spearman Avenue will go into effect Tuesday.
City council passed final reading Friday of an ordinance changing the operating rules after squabbles arose this year among vendors.
The market, established in 1932, required that vendors sell only what they personally grew, but some vendors have been coming in with produce they bought wholesale elsewhere, a move that irked those following the old rule.
The new rules say vendors can sell produce they buy elsewhere but must label it accordingly.
Permits at $4 per day are no longer available; vendors must buy a $40 monthly permit in advance. They can do that at the city building.
City Manager LaVon Saternow said she will visit the market at opening hour at 7 a.m. Tuesday to sell permits to those who haven't had a chance to get them. The market is open every Tuesday and Friday morning during the growing season.
