YOUNGSTOWN -- The city park board has approved the $275,000 purchase of a tub grinder, which turns large trees into mulch.
The parks department will contribute $150,000 and the sewer department will provide $50,000. A $75,000 grant from the Mahoning County Solid Waste Management District will pay the rest.
The parks department, which largely is responsible for trees in public spaces, and the street department have nowhere to dump tree debris, said Joseph R. McRae, the parks director. The resulting mulch will be used in city parks, he said.
Denise Skowron, park board chairwoman, suggested the city explore selling mulch to the public and renting out use of the machine to other local governments to create revenue.
