Boardman wins one, loses in championship
Boardman lost to North Canton 16-4 Tuesday in the state junior league championship baseball game.
Geoff Marple was 2-for-2 and Eddie Rohan homered.
On Monday, Boardman defeated Elyria East 6 -5. Boardman trailed 3-2 entering the seventh inning. Michael Keller lead off with a double and scored on Nick Schiavoni's single. With the bases loaded, Rohan singled to drive in two more runs. Mark Carrocce was the winning pitcher.
Canfield wins title
In the District 2 Little League (9-10) championship game, Canfield defeated Boardman West 4-2.
Anthony Gelonese was the winning pitcher and Dan Reese got the save. Dan Campolito, Brock McGivern and Jordon Italiano had RBIs.
Canfield plays in the state tournament in Hamilton Sunday.
Davidson, Blandlead AAU team
Ursuline senior Courtney Davidson and Boardman senior Amber Bland recently led their AAU team, the Queen City Jaguars, to a first-place finish in the 2003 Adidas Showtime National Championships in Duluth, Ga., for girls ages 16-and-younger.
Bland was named MVP of the tournament as the Jags went undefeated.
Both players were also named to the all-star team at the Adidas Top Ten All-American Camp in Atlanta and helped the Jags place fifth in the country at an AAU tournament in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
USA Today recently listed Davidson in its "Stock on the rise" section.
Wilson, Kokrakamong qualifiers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Justin Wilson of Canfield and Jason Kokrak of Warren were two of five golfers who qualified for regional competition during the U.S. Amateur Northern Ohio sectional qualifier at Mill Creek Park Tuesday.
The top five advanced to the regional from Aug. 17-24 at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh.
More than 130 amateurs took part. Joe Hurtuk of Bedford was medalist with 70-66--136; Steve Weir of Valley City was second, with 69-68--137, and Richard Berglund of Oakmont, Pa. was third with 71-67-138.
A five-person playoff for the final two spots had Wilson, who shot 70-69--139 and Kokrak 69-70-139 prevailing.
Lincoln Electricto sponsor races
FRANKLIN, Pa. -- Officials of Tri-City Speedway and Lincoln Electric finalized a sponsorship program for Sunday's program.
Racers in the super sprints, modifieds, E Mods and pro stocks must display a Lincoln Electric decal on the right side of their car in a prominent location to be eligible. A drawing will earn a $100 bonus for four drivers.
Race fans will also benefit. Roadrunner Kids Club members and others will be eligible to win posters of Tony Stewart and adults will be offered door prizes. To be eligible for the door prizes, fans must donate a toy at the track in support of Racers for Tots.
Gates open at 4 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m. Adult grandstand admission costs $10.
Nick Panezich 2ndat AAU meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Nick Panezich, who will be a junior at Springfield this fall, took second place in the shot put with a toss of 56 feet, 9 1/2 inches at a recent AAU track and field meet.
He also finished third in the discus (169-1) and 12th in the javelin (136-2).

Jury votes to convict
MINNEAPOLIS -- A jury convicted a Minneapolis man of murder in last year's shooting death of University of Minnesota football player Brandon Hall.
Jermaine Stansberry was on trial for beating and robbing a former Minnesota football player and shooting Hall, the player's friend, after a confrontation Sept. 1 in downtown Minneapolis.
