LISBON -- Three Columbiana County jail prisoners are facing assault charges today after a fight at the lockup. Two prisoners attacked a fellow inmate in a common area of the jail around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday after an argument sparked by accusations that someone spit on food, Sheriff Dave Smith explained today. One of the prisoners, David Vince, was treated at Salem Community Hospital for facial injuries, Smith said. He wasn't immediately sure how old Vince is or where he is from. All three prisoners are on lockdown status today.
Tutor contract renewed
NORTH LIMA -- The South Range School Board renewed a one-year contract with Faye Reed, a certified teacher who provides tutoring services to the school district. Her wage was set at $14 an hour. Reed started working for the school district last year, and her contract is to be reviewed annually.
CSEA custodial services
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners voted Tuesday to hire Ohio Industries for the Handicapped to provide custodial services at the county child-support enforcement agency. The one-year contract is for $39,586. Because CSEA is an arm of a state agency, the county's maintenance staff does not provide custodial services, county Administrator Gary Kubic said. OIH was created by the governor's office and gives employment opportunity to people with physical and mental disabilities. The agency also has been hired in the past to do microfilm work for the county.
Mill Creek bicycle ride
CANFIELD -- Friday is the registration deadline for the second annual bicycle ride through the Mill Creek watershed Aug. 10. The 30-mile course, which runs from Canfield to the creek's headwaters south of Columbiana, is rolling to level. A light lunch is included in the $10 registration fee. Italian Festival record set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The fifth annual Mount Carmel Italian Festival set an attendance record and raised just over $20,000 to help maintain the historic Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, according to Tony Trolio, chairman of the event. He set attendance at 8,000 for the festival held July 10-13 on the parish grounds. The theme was "Something Positive for Downtown Youngstown." Plans for next year's festival July 22-25 include giving two athletic scholarships to Youngstown State University students, he said.
Hill View Manor sale
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners voted Tuesday to go ahead with the sale of Hill View Manor, the county nursing home, despite objections from Commissioner Ed Fosnaught. County Controller Mary Ann Reiter and a Hill View employee also voiced their reservations about the sale. The vote was 2-1 to sell the facility to Sylvan Heights Realty Partners of New Castle.
Intersection to be closed
SALEM -- The intersection at East State Street and Ellsworth Avenue will be closed for repairs starting at 7:30 a.m. Monday, city officials say. The busy crossroad will remain closed through Tuesday. Traffic will be maintained only for westbound traffic on State Street. Eastbound traffic on State will be detoured. North- and southbound Ellsworth Avenue traffic also will be detoured. Crews will fix cracked and sunken pavement in the intersection.
Widening work continues
BROOKFIELD -- The Ohio Department of Transportation is reminding motorists that the intersection of state Routes 7 and 82 is closed for widening. Those attending tonight's World of Outlaws race show at Sharon Speedway in Hartford should take 82 to state Route 193, then north to state Route 305.
Hubbard library to reopen
HUBBARD -- The public library, closed because of flooding, is to reopen Thursday. The children's room remains closed. No overdue fines will be charged for the days the library was closed for emergency repairs. Tuesday's Law in the Library lecture segment, "Purchasing a Home," has been rescheduled for Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, local artist Linda Clark will teach a watercolor course on four successive Saturdays starting Aug. 9, from noon to 3 p.m. each week.
