Ex-Pa. man faces murder charge

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said they arrested a former Wheatland man wanted on a first-degree murder charge in Florida.
Charles R. Sarchet, 48, now living in Brookville, Fla., was arrested at the Starlite Inn on Pa. Route 18 shortly after 3 a.m. today after police learned he was in the area.
He is wanted on a murder charge by the Hernando County Sheriff's Department in Florida, police said, adding that the murder victim's car was in Sarchet's possession at the time of his arrest. Details were sketchy, but police said Sarchet is suspected of killing a man in an argument over money.
Florida authorities had notified Mercer County police agencies that Sarchet, who once lived on Canal Street in Wheatland, might be coming back to this area.
An off-duty Southwest Mercer County Regional police officer spotted the victim's car in Hermitage and alerted Hermitage police.
Hermitage and Southwest officers, as well as state troopers, surrounded the hotel and called Sarchet's room, asking him to step outside.
He did and was arrested without incident on a fugitive from justice charge.
He is being held in the Shenango Valley Regional Lock-Up pending arraignment. Police said Florida authorities are expected to seek his extradition and were sending detectives to Hermitage today.
