B.B. Roonerswins tournament
DANDRIDGE, Tenn. -- B.B. Rooners of the Greater Akron Baseball Federation (18-U) captured the championship of the Southeastern Baseball Classic last weekend.
B.B. Rooners defeated Cincinnati Sharks 3-1, Palmetto (S.C.) Express 5-4, Middle Valley (Chattanooga, Tenn.) Panthers 8-2 and Jefferson City, Tenn., 10-3, then Palmetto Express 11-1 in the championship game.
Leading B.B. Rooners offensively was Sam Mann (Howland), who went 9-for-12, with a home run and two doubles. Jeff Hehr (Cardinal Mooney) had eight hits, including two doubles, one triple and one home run, and five RBIs. Josh Faltot (Mercer) had seven hits with a homer and three RBIs. Ned Moore (Lakeview, Pa.) had six hits, including a home run and a double, and three RBIs.
Five pitchers had victories in the tournament, including Matt Colella (Shenango), John Nastase (Girard) and Mike Price (Chagrin Falls), who all threw complete games. Faltot and Allen Hoover (Warren JFK) also had wins, and Mann earned a save.
On Tuesday, B.B. Rooners defeated Pittsburgh Tigers 5-0. Colella, Price and Charles Miller (Mineral Ridge) combined on the shutout. Moore homered and singled, and Brian Daugherty (Brookfield) singled twice.
B.B. Rooners is 57-8.
Teri Haefke winsbowling tourney
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Teri Haefke of Austintown won the Professional Women's Bowling Association's Northeast Region Johnstown Open, July 25-27.
Haefke's pin total of 5,160 earned her the top prize of $1,000. Cathy Dorin-Lizzi of Sandusky was runner-up with 4,931. Nancy Scott of Alliance placed 13th.
Haefke also placed eighth during a recent PWBA regional in Altoona, where Jennifer Mellott of Austintown placed 20th, Scott 37th and Nancy Fairchild of Boardman, 45th.

HOWLAND -- Howland Middle School field will be the site of the Howland men's soccer alumni game Saturday at 2 p.m.
Junior golf champions
POLAND -- Scott Jones Jr., Bruce Timko, Molley Boney and Ariel Witmere were age-group winners in the 33rd annual Junior Classic Golf Tournament sponsored by the Independent Insurance Agents of Mahoning County.
At Fonderlac Country Club, Jones was best among 14-18 boys with a 69, followed by Michael Miladore with 73 and Tim Morrow with 74. Timko's 42 was the top score in the 13-under boys group followed by Paul Sujka's 42 and Weston Wagner's 44. Boney won the girls 14-18 category with 96 while Cara Graneto placed second with 106. Ariel Witmere's 47 was low among the 13-under girls while Chelsea Witmere was runner-up with 52.
Eastman andJurenovich are third
CHARDON -- Carlie Eastman and Katie Jurenovich, both of Warren, placed third in their age groups in the Plain Dealer North Coast Junior Golf Tour event at Pleasant Hills.
Eastman, competing in the 16-19 age group, registered 91, while Jurenovich (12-15) carded 96. The Pleasant Hills event was the 10th of 15 on the tour.
Canfield advances
CANFIELD --Canfield's 9-10 Little League baseball team will start play in the state tournament in Hamilton on Sunday. Canfield advanced by beating Boardman West, 4-2.
Aeros win 7-1
AKRON -- Francisco Cruceta held Bowie to two hits over eight innings and Fernando Cabrera pitched a hitless ninth as the Akron Aeros beat the Baysox 7-1 Tuesday night in the Eastern League.
Akron was led by Ryan Church, who had a first-inning grand slam.
