Champion school board places levy renewal on November ballot
CHAMPION -- The school board approved a resolution Tuesday asking voters to renew a tax levy in November.
The 15-mill levy, first passed in 1994, would provide about $1.56 million in operating expenses if renewed.
"It should be renewed around 10.2 or 10.8 mills," Treasurer Brian Gillespie predicted.
Champion schools maintain one of the lowest operating budgets in the county. "We can be very proud that we are operating at the lowest millage in the county and yet we are one of the best schools in the district," board President John P. Mahan said.
In other matters, U.S. Department of Education Title I funding for the district was increased from $45,000 to $120,000.00 allowing the school board to add one full-time and one part-time Title I teacher to its staff for at least two years. Title I provides additional academic services for children, such as tutors for reading programs.
An increase of $30,000 in Title VI grant money provided by the U.S. Department of Education also will pay for additional teacher aides.
The board accepted the resignations of Joe Krumpak, assistant varsity football coach; Luanne Hite, senior class adviser; and Jason Brown, second-grade teacher.
