ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Andy Pettitte (13-6) won his career-high eighth straight decision, and Hideki Matsui went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Robin Ventura and Jorge Posada each drove in two runs for New York.
Red Sox 14, Rangers 7
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Bill Mueller became the first player in major league history to hit grand slams from both sides of the plate in a game, connecting for three homers. Mueller, batting left-handed, hit a solo homer in the third inning against R.A. Dickey. Batting right-handed, he hit his first slam off Aaron Fultz in the seventh for a 9-4 lead. One inning later, he connected from the left side against Jay Powell for a 14-4 advantage. Mueller had a career-high nine RBIs with the first three-homer game of his career. Nomar Garciaparra and Trot Nixon also homered for the Red Sox.
Orioles 7, Twins 5
MINNEAPOLIS -- Jay Gibbons homered and drove in three runs and Tony Batista also hit a home run for Baltimore. Gibbons hit a two-run shot in the first, a run-scoring single in the sixth and was at the plate when the Orioles took the lead on a wild pitch in the eighth. Hector Carrasco (1-2) pitched 11/3 innings, allowing two hits and one run. Jorge Julio worked the ninth for his 24th save. Luis Rivas, 2-for-4 with three RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the third for the Twins, who lost their third straight.
Devil Rays 9, Blue Jays 8
TORONTO -- Rocco Baldelli hit a go-ahead two-run single in the ninth inning. Travis Lee and Aubrey Huff homered for the Devil Rays, who rallied from 4-0 and 7-6 deficits. Toronto's Carlos Delgado hit his AL-leading 31st homer in the ninth, cutting the lead to 9-8. Toronto's Greg Myers homered twice, including a go-ahead three-run shot in the seventh. He set a career high with his 12th homer and tied a career high with five RBIs.
White Sox 9, Royals 6
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mark Buehrle won his seventh straight decision as Chicago closed within three games of the AL Central lead. Paul Konerko, Joe Crede, Tony Graffanino and Magglio Ordonez homered for the White Sox, who tied a season high with 16 hits. Buehrle (9-10) allowed three runs and nine hits over 61/3 innings. Tom Gordon got three outs for his sixth save in 10 chances.
Mariners 11, Tigers 5
SEATTLE -- Edgar Martinez, Bret Boone and John Olerud hit home runs, and Gil Meche ended a personal four-game losing streak for Seattle. Boone went 3-for-4 and had four RBIs, while Martinez and Olerud each had three RBIs. Meche (11-7), who hadn't won since June 26, pitched six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks, with four strikeouts. He gave up solo homers to Dmitri Young, his career-high 22nd, and Kevin Witt.

Braves 6, Astros 3
ATLANTA -- Russ Ortiz stretched his winning streak to a career-high eight games and hit a homer. Marcus Giles had a career-high five hits and set an Atlanta record with nine consecutive hits over two games. Gary Sheffield hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the fifth that put the Braves ahead for good. Ortiz (15-4) allowed three runs in 61/3 innings to join Toronto's Roy Halladay as the only 15-game winners in the majors. John Smoltz worked the ninth for his 39th save in 42 chances. Giles followed up two straight four-hit games by going 5-for-5. He broke Jeff Blauser's Atlanta record of eight straight hits and is one shy of the NL record, shared by 10 players and last done by Cincinnati's Bip Roberts in 1992.
Marlins 2, Diamondbacks 1
MIAMI -- Brad Penny allowed one run and four hits in seven-plus innings to lead Florida over Arizona, which lost a team-record eighth straight road game. Mike Lowell and Juan Encarnacion drove in Florida's runs in the fifth against Brandon Webb (7-4).

MONTREAL -- Scott Rolen hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. Garrett Stephenson scattered four hits for his first complete game since Aug. 5, 2000, and out-dueled Livan Hernandez. Rolen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a homer in the second inning.

PHILADELPHIA -- Vicente Padilla pitched eight shutout innings and Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer as Philadelphia ended a four-game losing streak. Padilla (10-8) allowed three hits, struck out four and walked one.

CINCINNATI -- Jay Payton matched his career high with four hits in Cincinnati's first game under interim manager Dave Miley. Darren Oliver (9-6) gave up four hits and three runs in six-plus innings, improving to 6-1 in his last eight starts. He also had a pair of hits, including an RBI single.
Brewers 6, Mets 3
NEW YORK -- Royce Clayton hit a three-run homer, and Keith Osik added a solo shot for Milwaukee. Tom Glavine had his second one-inning stint of the season against the Brewers, leaving because of a right ribcage strain. Milwaukee's Ben Sheets (10-7) allowed three runs on seven hits and didn't walk a batter in 62/3 innings.
Cubs 3, Giants 0
CHICAGO -- Matt Clement pitched a two-hitter and Moises Alou hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead Chicago. Clement (8-9) struck out eight and walked two in his third career shutout, his first since a three-hitter against Arizona last Aug. 24. He had been 2-4 with a 6.98 ERA against the Giants.
