YOUNGSTOWN | CIC meeting
Downtown's redevelopment agency, Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp., handled these items Tuesday:
Heard discussion about the status of an addition to the George V. Voinovich Government Center for the state bureau of workers' compensation and the Mahoning County Children Services Board. CIC expects to have a decision from the county early next month on whether CSB will be part of the addition. Meanwhile, CIC is working with the state to build space for workers' compensation.
Approved spending $300 on paint and brushes so volunteers can paint over graffiti and boards that cover vacant storefronts. Jack Carlton, an artist who has erected murals on vacant buildings, is coordinating the effort.
Approved the sale of the Morley Center for the Arts to Ballet Western Reserve, which fulfilled its six-year lease-to-own contract. It's the third lease-to-own deal that has resulted in the sale of a CIC building.
Heard Jason Whitehead, CIC executive director, talk about downtown business owners' expressing disappointment that work to reopen Federal Street to traffic will be delayed until next year.
Heard Whitehead talk about a new pizza shop that is expected to open soon at 108 W. Federal St., Tomasino Pizza.
Heard Whitehead talk about renewed expressions of interest in opening bars and restaurants with the city's recent approval of downtown as a state-recognized entertainment district.
