STUDENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Presidential Classroom
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sarah Kelly, a student at Cardinal Mooney High School, attended the weeklong Presidential Classroom Scholars Program this June and July in Washington, D.C. Students interacted with elected officials, presidential appointees, military officials, business leaders and journalists; visited capital sites; and participated in a mock presidential election and other events. Students attending the event must be high school juniors or seniors with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0. The event is sponsored by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Presidential Classroom civic education organization. Sarah is the daughter of David and Barbara Kelly of Youngstown.
Young Leaders conference
MINERAL RIDGE -- Erica Cross, a junior at Mineral Ridge High School, was selected to attend a National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., in July.
The 10-day event for high school students who demonstrate leadership potential and scholastic merit is a program of the nonprofit, nonpartisan Congressional Youth Leadership Council. Erica was one of 400 participants to meet with legislators and journalists and participate in government role-playing and simulation activities. She is the daughter of Troy and Janice Cross.
Youth medical forum
CAMPBELL -- Megan Cunning, a student at Campbell Memorial High School, attended the 10-day National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Boston, Mass., in July. She is one of 350 participating students, who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in medicine.
The event, sponsored by the nonprofit NYLF, included topics such as public health, medical ethics, research and general practice, visits to medical facilities and with professionals, and a diagnosis and treatment simulation activity.
MEDCAMP at NEOUCOM
ROOTSTOWN -- Several local students were among 50 ninth-graders to attend the three-day MEDCAMP in July at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
Students were selected based on achievement in science and interest in a medical career. They interacted with doctors and researchers, participated in laboratory and simulation activities and learned how to interact with patients and use tools of research and medical practice.

Harding High School, Warren; Raymond Fuentes of Boardman High School; Jillianne Hiller of John F. Kennedy High School, Warren; Justin Knapp of East Liverpool High School; Olivia Lane of Hubbard High School; Britanie Lindsey of Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown; Monica Mabiala and Gerald Taylor of Liberty High School; Elizabeth McKinnon of Beaver Local High School; and Antonia Nwankwo, Teonna Bass and Arielle Washington of Ursuline High School, Youngstown.

Upward Bound funding
YOUNGSTOWN -- The U.S. Department of Education has reauthorized funding of about $982,000 for the next four years to Youngstown State University's Upward Bound program, which aims to help first-generation, college-bound students or students from low-income families enroll in and graduate from college.
YSU's program has served 86 students since 1998. Participants come from one of the Youngstown public high schools. They attend college-preparatory classes, Saturday enrichment classes, workshops and a six-week summer program at YSU; visit area colleges; and receive tutoring and in-school counseling.
Extended-care option
WARREN -- The school committee of Warren Christian School recently instituted a new extended-care option for families of kindergarten pupils. Care is available during the school year starting at 6 a.m. and after school until 5:30 p.m. The kindergarten program is offered from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; pupils receive a hot lunch. Early Entrance Test
CORTLAND -- The Mathews School District will hold the first portion of the Early Entrance Test at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Currie Elementary School, 3306 Ridge Road. The test is for children who will turn 5 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31. Call (330) 637-2976 to preregister.
