NFL ROUNDUP | Training camp news and notes
Saints: Kick returner Michael Lewis was hospitalized after colliding with a teammate during a drill. Lewis, who broke the NFL record for combined kickoff and punt return yardage last season, was taken off the field on a stretcher after running into safety Mel Mitchell.
Lions: When receiver Az-Zahir Hakim dislocated his hip last November, there were fears his career might be over. Hakim, though, never let that thought enter his mind. His faith and hard work paid off this week when he returned to the practice field at training camp. Hakim showed no signs of discomfort or problems during practice, but coach Steve Mariucci is still going to be cautious.
Dolphins: Miami's only two unsigned rookies reluctantly agreed to contracts and reported for training camp, and coach Dave Wannstedt said their tardiness showed in practice. Tackle Wade Smith and guard Taylor Whitley, both third-round draft picks, missed five practices before signing four-year deals. Both rookies will compete for backup jobs in the offensive line, where depth is perhaps the team's biggest question mark.
Titans: Running back Chris Brown will miss at least two weeks of training camp with a strained left hamstring. Brown, the third-round pick out of Colorado, fell to the ground at the end of a running play Sunday. Coach Jeff Fisher said the results of an MRI on Monday showed significant damage to the muscle, but they hope Brown can return by the end of the preseason.
Falcons: Cornerback Tod McBride will likely miss 4-to-6 weeks after breaking his left thumb on the third day of training camp. Falcons coach Dan Reeves said McBride, listed No. 2 behind Ray Buchanan at left cornerback, will see a hand specialist and undergo surgery.
Giants: Sixth-round draft pick Frank Walker dislocated his right elbow. Walker fell hard after getting tangled with Daryl Jones going for a pass. Coach Jim Fassel said Walker might be sidelined for three weeks. Injuries also caught up with a couple other cornerbacks. Starting cornerback Will Peterson had a slight groin pull and missed the afternoon practice Monday. Fourth-round draft choice Rod Babers pulled a hamstring in the morning and might miss a week, Fassel said.
Jaguars: Defensive lineman Larry Smith was released from the hospital Monday, the day after collapsing twice on the field. Team spokesman Dan Edwards said the 6-foot-5, 310-pound defensive lineman would return to the team today, although no decision was made as to whether he would practice.
Bills: Willis McGahee's agent insists the injured first-round draft pick is ready to begin practicing as soon as he signs a contract. Bills president Tom Donahoe disagreed. Saying that Drew Rosenhaus is attempting to improve his position in contract talks, Donahoe added that the agent should "leave the medical opinions to the medical people." McGahee is the only draft pick the Bills have yet to sign, and has been working out at his Miami home while the team opened training camp last Thursday.
Rams: Defensive back Jason Sehorn had surgery on his broken left foot, an injury expected to sideline him 10 weeks. Sehorn spent Monday night in a St. Louis hospital. He is expected to then go to his home in Dallas for four or five days, Rams coach Mike Martz said. Sehorn is supposed to rejoin the team before the opening exhibition game Aug. 8 at Oakland.
Broncos: Running back Mike Anderson sat out practice for the second straight day because of fluid on his left knee. Anderson, who had arthroscopic surgery in the off-season, had his knee drained Sunday.
Ravens: Given the opportunity to distance himself from the competition for the starting quarterback job, Chris Redman dropped the ball. On a day in which first-round picks defensive tackle Terrell Suggs and quarterback Kyle Boller became holdouts, Redman and the offense stumbled through the opening practice of training camp. The two-hour session was marred by missed snap counts, botched handoffs and dropped passes.
Seahawks: Defensive tackle Norris McCleary was treated for dehydration Monday after complaining of cramping in his hamstrings and calves. McCleary, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound third-year pro from East Carolina, reported to trainers when he began to feel uncomfortable in morning drills. He was treated briefly on the field, then went inside and was given intravenous fluids.
Cowboys: Former club president and general manager Tex Schramm will be honored this season with a patch on the team's jerseys or a decal on their helmets, owner Jerry Jones said. Schramm, who will be the 12th member of the organization inducted into the Cowboys' Ring of Honor, died of natural causes earlier this month. He was 83.
Raiders: Center Barret Robbins, sidelined for the first four days of training camp because of a sore right knee, will rejoin the team on the field today, coach Bill Callahan said. Robbins is trying to regain the starting job after his disappearance on the eve of the Super Bowl and subsequent treatment for bipolar disorder. When the team reported to camp last week, the Raiders placed Robbins on the physically unable to perform list. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee in April.
Eagles: Defensive end Jerome McDougle, the first-round draft pick, and running back Duce Staley did not attend the mandatory 7 p.m. meeting at Lehigh University. Staley and cornerback Bobby Taylor were the only two players not to participate in the team's last minicamp. Both are in the final years of their contracts. Staley is scheduled to make $2.2 million this year, his seventh with the Eagles.
Moves: The Bengals claimed offensive lineman Alex Sulfsted off waivers from the Redskins. Sulfsted played in 14 games, starting three, last season for the Redskins as a guard and tackle. He was drafted in 2001 by Kansas City. ... The Colts waived guard Rob Murphy and wide receiver Andre Forde. The Colts also placed quarterback Tom Arth and defensive tackle David Pugh on the reserve/non-football injury list. Arth has a right shoulder injury, while Pugh is recovering from off-season surgery on a torn patella tendon in his left knee. Defensive tackle Jason Stewart also was placed on the reserve/did not report list. ... The Cardinals reached a contract agreement with first-round draft pick Calvin Pace. The defensive end from Wake Forest agreed to a four-year deal worth about $8 million with a team option for a fifth. The deal could surpass $11 million if escalator clauses are met. The Cardinals' other first-round pick, wide receiver Bryant Johnson of Penn State, remains unsigned. ... Offensive guard Brenden Stai signed with the Patriots, who also have had talks with free-agent fullback Larry Centers. The 6-foot-4, 318-pound Stai has played eight seasons in the NFL with four teams. Also, the Patriots released rookie safety Scott Farley, who was signed as an undrafted free agent. ... The Texans re-signed offensive tackle Tarlos Thomas and waived safety Kyries Hebert. ... The Jets waived quarterback Tory Woodbury. ... The Broncos signed tackles Mario Fatafehi and Darius Holland and waived running back KaRon Coleman and cornerback Sam Young.
