Memorial service will include Hartzell

YOUNGSTOWN -- Law enforcement officers in the city and Mahoning County on Tuesday were altering plans for a police memorial service slated for May 12.
Youngstown Detective Sgt. Elrico Alli said another name will be added to the list of fallen officers to be honored at the 11 a.m. event at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel.
The service had been planned before Patrol Officer Michael Hartzell, 26, was killed Tuesday morning during a traffic stop.
He said Hartzell's memory will be among those honored at the memorial service to pay tribute to those who have given their lives in the line of duty.
David P. Sweeney, Youngstown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28 president, also has requested that all flags in the city be flown at half-staff that day.
The service is sponsored by the Lodge 28 and the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department FOP Lodge 141.
A luncheon will follow the event. Call Detective Sgt. Patricia Garcar (330) 742-8946 or (330) 742-8777.
In the city, memorials to fallen officers are at the north end of the traffic island at Market and Federal streets and on the second floor of the Youngstown Police Department, 116 W. Boardman St., Youngstown FOP documents show.
A placard also marks the South Avenue Bridge between Front Street and Hadnet Drive in Youngstown as Peace Officers Memorial Bridge. It lists names of county police officers who died in the line of duty.
