Forum holds spring flower show, awards horticulture scholarships
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Garden Forum of the Greater Youngstown Area held its spring flower show April 12 and 13 at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center at Fellow Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park.
Judges for the event were Evelyn Resek, Ruth Slanto, Margaret Mary Walsh, Joe Alessi and John Waldof. Pearl Marlos served as chairwoman.
Those awarded blue ribbons in horticulture were Olga Morrison and Irene John, Austintown; Carol Lunger, member-at-large; Sheila Bowman, Nature Lovers; Dorothy Haddox, Our Lady of Fatima; Martha Murphy, St. Edward; the Rev. Edward Noga, St. Patrick; and Marlos, Silver Leaf. Murphy and Haddox also received gold seals in the category.
Blue ribbons for artistic design were won by Bowman, Marlos and Lunger, with Marlos also garnering a gold seal in the division.
Recipients
The organization has awarded scholarships to students who will study horticulture this fall. The winners are Grant C. Porter of Alliance, who will attend Kent State University, and R. Scott Pavalko of Poland, who will attend Ohio State University.
They will be honored at the forum's general meeting to be held May 21 at Poland United Methodist Church.
