CLEVELAND -- A statewide salute begins Thursday at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "Hang on Sloopy: The Music of Ohio" features instruments, costumes and original recordings that reflect Ohio's contributions to the pop music scene. Among those who are remembered: Sydney Nathan, who founded King/Federal Records in Cincinnati; Dayton-based acts Ohio Players, Roger Troutman, The Breeders and Guided By Voices; Akron's rock connections, Devo and Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders; Macy Gray, Marilyn Manson and The O'Jays, all from Canton; and Clevelanders Alan Freed, Tracy Chapman, Nine Inch Nails and Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony, among others.
Jubilee's annual show
SALEM -- "Love's Old Sweet Song" is the theme of Salem Jubilee Chorus' 42nd annual show at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Salem High School Auditorium, 1200 E. Sixth St. Featured acts will be barbershop groups Park Avenue and Impulse, both from Columbus, and Rave, a Sweet Adelines group from Pittsburgh. Spring concert at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN --Youngstown State University Dana Chorale and University Chorus will present a spring concert at 4 p.m. next Sunday at Bliss Recital Hall in the College of Fine and Performing Arts building on Wick Avenue.
Hae-Jong Lee, who joined the Dana School of Music in 2002 as director of choral activities, will conduct the concert.

Free Comic Book Day
Comic books will be yours for the taking May 3, which is International Free Comic Book Day. Local participants will be All American Comics and Cards, which has stores on West Market Street in Warren and Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman. Free comics will be available from noon to 5 p.m. Call (330) 393-3137 for details. The event was started last year to celebrate the vitality and variety in the comic book industry.
Songfest in Boardman
BOARDMAN -- A Gymanfa Ganu, or Welsh hymn songfest, will be held by Calon Lan Welsh Club at 3 p.m. May 4 in the chapel room of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive. A traditional tea will be served following the program.
Admission is $2. Proceeds will benefit the Welsh Home for the Aged in Rocky River and the organization's scholarship fund. Call Esther Towns, (330) 788-3474, for more information.
'Preschooler Days'
CANFIELD -- Children ages 3 to 6 may dress like settlers, play old-fashioned games and churn butter during "Preschooler Days" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19-21 at Loghurst Museum, 3967 Boardman-Canfield Road. Participants will tour Loghurst and use various learning activity stations. Cost is $3. Families and groups are welcome, but reservations are required for groups of 10 of more. Songwriter recognized
Tim Gilliland of Youngstown has received honorable mention in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for 2002. Gilliland, who submitted a song titled "Turtle Time," was among 120 people whose efforts were recently recognized. Grand prize winners in various categories qualify for the Maxell Song of the Year contest, which features a top prize of $20,000.
Music festival planned
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College Office of Music Outreach will host a nine-day summer music festival featuring music education and performance training workshops complemented by public concerts.
Scheduled for June 14-22 at the college, the festival will include a three-credit, graduate-level intermediate unit course for K-8 educators. Running concurrently will be a minimusic camp providing elementary school children with a unique experience with chamber music.
