SOFTBALL Ursuline's comeback subdues Mooney



The Irish beat the Cardinals for the first time in six seasons.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning, the Ursuline High softball team rallied for five runs in its final two at-bats to defeat Steel Valley Conference-rival Cardinal Mooney for the first time in six seasons on a 5-4 decision.
Ali Vitello's two-run homer in the sixth inning tied the game. Courtney Davidson doubled, took third on a fielder's choice, then scored on a passed ball to put the Irish ahead, 3-2.
In the seventh inning, Vanessa Dickson doubled for the Irish (5-7, 3-1 Steel Valley Conference). After Jenna Klempay walked, Allyssandra Parry advanced them with a sacrifice. Mariah Snyder scored Dickson with a sacrifice fly and Vitello singled to bring home Klempay for a 5-2 lead.
In the Cardinals' seventh inning, Kaitlyn Burnat walked, then scored on Kristen Laskowski's homer.
Snyder finished with two hits, two stolen bases and a run scored.
Rayen 9, Wilson 6
YOUNGSTOWN -- Beatrice Wright and Joi Smith each had two hits for the Tigers (2-2, 1-0 City Series). Winning pitcher Natasha Clemons (2-2) doubled and limited Wilson to two hits.
For Wilson (2-7, 0-2), Alex Cardarelli and Errin Thompson had hits.
Western Reserve 3, Springfield 2
BERLIN CENTER -- Teri Bader singled to score Tiffany Shugart with the winning run in the sixth inning.
Bader had two hits for the first-place Blue Devils (9-2, 7-1 Inter-County League). Winning pitcher Mikah Berger (5-2) scattered four hits. Amanda Ward doubled for Springfield (4-4, 4-2).
Jackson-Milton 6, Mineral Ridge 2
MINERAL RIDGE -- Lynsey Kosa had two doubles, two RBIs and three stolen bases and scored twice to lead the Bluejays (6-2, 4-2 ICL).
Winning pitcher Corey Velk (6-2) struck out four and walked three.
For the Rams (8-2, 3-2), Kaili Gehring (8-2) struck out eight and walked six batters. Tomisha Sangregrio homered and Sylvia Dubic doubled.
South Range 9, McDonald 1
MCDONALD -- Jessica Spickler had two hits and two RBIs as the Raiders (5-4, 2-3 ICL) rolled past McDonald (0-7, 0-5). Skye Walley was the winning pitcher.
McDonald relief pitcher Cindy Green struck out nine of the 12 batters she faced.
Campbell 6, Lowellville 4
CAMPBELL -- Raylene Paris tripled and Justine Paris doubled for Campbell (5-2). Kristin Grachanin singled and scored the winning run on an error. Winning pitcher Candace Hrelec (3-1) struck out eight batters and walked six.
Champion 4, LaBrae 1
LEAVITTSBURG -- Lauren Seifert had two hits and two RBIs to lead Champion past LaBrae, in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game. Kasey Karr added two hits for the Golden Flashes (7-2, 3-1) and earned the victory, while Jaclyn Carpenter and Beth Rowland each doubled.
Brookfield 4, Liberty 1
BROOKFIELD -- The Warriors recorded their first TAC victory of the season.
Senior Julie Raykie and freshman Mary Palumbo combined on a one-hitter for Brookfield (2-6, 1-5). The Warriors' offense came from Rachel Pasquerilla, Sarah Jugenheimer and Michelina Vitello, who each had two hits.
Jeanette Rivera took the loss for Liberty (1-8, 0-5).
