MOUNT UNION COLLEGE, Alliance
Senior communications studies major Ian Andrews of Warren and junior media studies major Kelly Kiraly of McDonald have been named to the Pi Omicron chapter of the national Order of Omega at the college. The order is a national leadership honorary for outstanding junior and senior fraternity and sorority members.
Andrews is a 2000 graduate of Howland High School; Kiraly is a 2000 graduate of McDonald High School.
ASHLAND UNIVERSITY
Middle school education major Christopher Peretti of Poland and early childhood education major Renee Robertson of Hubbard are completing student teaching this spring through the university.
Peretti, son of James Peretti, is teaching social studies and language arts at Perrysville Junior High School.
Robertson, daughter of Kathleen and Ronald Robertson, is teaching third and fourth grades at Cornerstone Elementary School.
Middle school education major Christopher Kondas of Canfield is a member of the Judicial Board at the university. Members must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5 and are selected by university officials to formulate judicial policies and oversee cases of serious violations.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Olympia Scott-Feagins of Youngstown, in the Williamson College of Business Administration, is the winner of the first Freshman Reader's Dialogue Essay Contest at YSU.
The essay was based on the "Dancing with Strangers" book by Mel Watkins, who visited campus and spoke to students in October. The essay contest was open to all YSU students in freshman English composition courses.
Qi Jiang, an associate professor of sociology and anthropology, and her social research class attended the 2003 Midwest Student Sociology Conference in Goshen, Ind. Students participated in real-life projects and gained hands-on experience in all phases of the research process.
In the past, only six or seven YSU students attended the conference. This year, 14 students attended. They are: Alyssa Karalla, Katrina Comer, Tarnish Crump, David James, Megan McKenzie, Anthony Meek and Delaine Soto, all of Youngstown; Lindsay Gartland and Tara Ostrosky of Warren; Patrick Carbon of Canfield; Carol B. Cook of Hubbard; Michelle Lorubbio of Struthers; Nick DeMaio of Hermitage, Pa.; and Leslie Wereb of Cornersburg.
