CRAIG BEACH -- Village council will meet in special session at 7:30 p.m. Monday to fill a council seat vacated by the resignation of Robert Richards. Council meets at 2538 Grandview Road.
Talk of Garbo, Hepburn
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Two great screen beauties, Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn, will be the topic of conversation Wednesday at the Shenango Valley Senior Community Center. "Opposite Icons: Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn" will be presented at 1:30 p.m. by Commonwealth Speaker Barry Paris. Paris is film critic for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The program, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, is free and open to the public.
The two actresses had enormous international impact as women and as fashion and cultural icons but were very different people. Garbo was mysterious and gave no interviews in the last 50 years of her life, but Hepburn was a passionately devoted mother who never stopped speaking on behalf of the world's children.
Taking bids for trail
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Planning Commission is advertising for sealed bids to pave 8.4 miles of the planned Trumbull County Western Reserve Greenway bike trail from Champion Road East to Hyde-Oakfield Road in Bristol. The project will be paid for with a $1.1 million state grant and $269,000 from the county.
The baseball glove
HOWLAND -- Baseball glove repairman Mike Wilkerson of Vienna will talk about the history of baseball gloves and their care at 6:30 April 23 at the Howland Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library. The program is free.
Relay for Life funds
NILES -- A race for Oscar netted more than $100 in donations for the local chapter of Relay For Life.
Employees at Fairhaven Programs concocted a "kidnapping" scheme involving Oscar, the statue used for the Employee of the Quarter award. Taken from Dorothy Kuszmaul, a nurse at the facility, Oscar was held hostage for more than a week. Employees contributed toward his ransom, with all money collected to be donated to Relay for Life, which in turn benefits the American Cancer Society.
Oscar was returned in time for last Friday's announcement of the next Employee of the Quarter, which was Kuszmaul again.
