YOUNGSTOWN -- A 40-year-old Farrell, Pa., man was sentenced to 121/2 years in federal prison after being convicted of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine.
Alex Martin conspired with two other men to bring cocaine from California to the Shenango Valley, where they planned to sell it, said William Edwards of the U.S. attorney's office. Martin was also sentenced Monday to five years' probation after he gets out of prison, and was fined $5,000. The two other men, Ramon T. Wright and Roger Williams, pleaded guilty to similar charges last year and were sentenced in December. Wright, formerly of Farrell and Sharon, Pa., received a 95-month prison sentence, and Williams, of California, received a 105-month sentence. Each also is to pay a $3,000 fine.
Ninth-grader with gun
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a .22-caliber magazine and 14 live rounds were found Monday in the pants pocket of a Woodrow Wilson High School ninth-grader, police searched the boy's locker for the gun, while he stood by, his jacket draped over a shoulder, reports show. Police found the gun inside the lining of the jacket, despite the boy's protesting that it already had been searched. He was taken to the juvenile justice center to face a charge of conveyance of a dangerous ordnance on school property.
Library friends meeting
LIBERTY -- There will be a general membership meeting of the Friends of The Liberty Branch Library on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Plaza Branch location.
Discussion will include the May grand opening of the new Liberty Branch Library. This meeting is open to all members as well as anyone wishing to join. Membership forms are available at the library.
Trustee training session
HUBBARD -- Township Trustee Joseph Gleydura has completed a training session conducted by the State Employee Relations Board.
The township hopes to use the training to negotiate employee contracts rather than to hire legal counsel for bargaining.
