'Nite at the Ice Zone'
BOARDMAN -- On Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m., the local chapter of the Mother's Hope Foundation will sponsor its second annual "Nite at the Ice Zone," an all-star hockey game between the Youngstown State University Penguin's hockey team and members of the Northeast Ohio High School Association. Proceeds from the event go to the Mother's Hope Foundation to ease the suffering of sick and disadvantaged children locally and abroad. Two alumni (names to be announced closer to game time) from the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins are to serve as honorary coaches for this event, and their game jerseys will be given out as prizes. Walk for diabetes
CANFIELD -- The Tri-County Chapter of the American Diabetes Association will have its annual walk Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Registration for the five-mile walk through Canfield will be at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is preferred, by calling (330) 835-3149 or (888) 342-2383, but walkers may register the day of the walk. Griffin to speak
BOARDMAN -- Archie Griffin is keynote speaker for the Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties annual dinner at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Antone's Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St. After the dinner, the Anthony Vivo Community Service Award and the Frances Schwebel Solomon Spirit of Life Award will be presented.
Griffin, associate director of athletics at Ohio State University, became the only two-time winner of football's Heisman Trophy while playing running back for OSU. Fibromyalgia course
LISBON -- The Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter, offers a free Fibromyalgia Self-Help Course, beginning this Thursday through Nov. 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Vista Centre, 100 Vista Drive. Screenings for kids
SALEM -- Salem Community Hospital has expanded its Rehabilitation Services Department to offer pediatric speech therapy, which provides assistance for children with speech or language difficulties. Rehabilitation Services will offer three free screenings by a licensed pediatric speech-language pathologist for children ages 6 months to 18 years Oct. 22 and Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Salem Medical Arts Development, 2020 E. Medical seminar set
BOARDMAN -- The American Heart Association's Operation Stroke medical education committee is offering a medical professional seminar Oct. 11-12 at the Holiday Inn on South Avenue. The program, "Stroke: The Second Annual Update on Medical and Therapeutic Intervention," is open to physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, licensed social workers and case managers.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Brett Kisella, assistant professor in the department of neurology and director or residency at the University of Cincinnati Hospital. Friday sessions focus on medical updates on stroke; Saturday will feature nursing and therapeutic updates. Continuing education credits will be awarded.

Flu, pneumonia shots
