NEW WILMINGTON -- Westminster's victory over Allegheny was a huge one for the program, and the Titans made it look easy.
Scoring the first 17 points of the game, the Titans (2-1) cruised to a convincing 24-13 win over the Gators at Harold Burry Stadium Saturday afternoon.
"We like to play ball-control football and the guys did a good job of doing that in the first half," said Titan coach Jerry Schmitt. "Any way you look at it, it was a big win for us."
The Titans took a 14-0 lead at halftime. On the first play of the second period, the Titans completed a 6-play, 59-yard drive on an 11-yard scoring run by Scott Froelich to take a 7-0 lead, then Froelich hauled in a short pass from quarterback Kevin Huber and turned it into a 49-yard scoring play in the final minute of the half.
Froelich rushed for 187 yards and one score on 32 carries and had two receptions for 52 yards. Huber completed 9-of-13 passes for 183 yards and a pair of scores.
"I just threw the ball to [Froelich], then stood back and watched him," said Huber. "The pass was for only about 5 yards, but he is so athletic that he made a lot of tacklers miss and turned it into a long touchdown play. He is just fun to watch."
Miss scoring chances
The Gators let three scoring opportunities get away during the opening 30 minutes, failing to convert on three field goal attempts.
"That killed us," said Allegheny coach Mark Matlak. "We made too many mistakes, but overall, we just got beat by a better football team."
Josh Simpson gave the Titans a 17-0 lead on their first possession of the second half with a 35-yard field goal.
Later in the period, the Gators used a big play, a 63-yard TD connection from quarterback Bubba Smith to wideout Luke Pelger, to get on the board.
The Titans answered Pelger's score when Huber tossed his second touchdown pass of the game, a 70-yarder to Matt Steve to give Westminster a 24-7 lead.
"That was important for us to answer their score," said Schmitt. "We did it three times last week [in a 24-21 win over Mansfield]."
Smith agreed that Steve's score was a huge factor.
"We had just gotten back into the game and when they came right back and scored, it took away what momentum we had just gotten with our score," said Smith. "We have not been scoring a lot of points this season, and that made it hurt even more."
Allegheny finished the scoring when Smith hit Jamie Sye with a 10-yard pass in the final minutes of the game.
