Musica Sacra plans'Beethovenfest'
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Musica Sacra, under the direction of Youngstown State University professors Dr. Ron Gould and Hae-Jong Lee, will present "Beethovenfest" at 10:30 am. Oct. 13 St. John's Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave.
The program will include Mass in C Major, Hallelujah chorus and a setting of Psalm 19.
The performance will feature the choirs from St. John's Episcopal, St. Columba Cathedral, and Youngstown State University's Dana Chorale. Featured soloists include: sopranos Patricia Boehm, Elizabeth Malys, Suzanne Rudnytsky and Misook Yun; alto Olena Jatsyshyn; tenor Leonard Suzelis; and bass Thomas Scurich.
John Wilcox, also of Youngstown State University, is concertmaster of the Youngstown Musica Sacra Orchestra.
Members include performers from the Youngstown Symphony, the Warren Chamber Orchestra, along with faculty and students from the Dana School of Music.
Daniel W. Laginya is organist and the Director of Music at St. Columba Cathedral.
Youngstown Musica Sacra was established in 1980 with the assistance of a grant from the Ohio Arts Council. The Musica Sacra ensemble presents annual concerts and liturgies.
For the past five years the Dana Chorale has joined in performance of sacred choral-orchestral repertory. This year the Dana Chorale will be led by newly appointed conductor Hae-Jong Lee.
Calvary minister writesbook, produces CD
YOUNGSTOWN -- Darren Thomas, who is minister of worship at Calvary Ministries International, has produced a CD and written his first book.
Thomas and the Evangel Choir of the Evangel Music Group have put out their first CD single, "Point of View." This four-song is a preview of a complete CD due to be released 2003.
Thomas' first book entitled "When Zion Sings!" is a compilation of principles and practices on the subject of praise and worship. Both are available at the church at 1812 Oak Hill Ave., or by calling (330) 747-4445.
Salvation Army
AUSTINTOWN -- The Austintown Salvation Army Corps is launching a variety of new programs at its building at 6431 Mahoning Ave., including:
UA senior social group has begun meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesdays
UAlso, a food pantry will begin October 7. There are income requirements for the food pantry.
UA parenting class meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays.
UA 12-step addiction recovery program has started at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays.
UThe "Soldiers in Christ" group of Alcoholics Victorious meets for fellowship at 6 p.m. and Bible study at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays. Alcoholics Victorious is a Christian-based recovery program.

Christian drama set
SHARON, Pa. -- A dramatic presentation, "Heaven's Gates & amp; Hell's Flames" will be presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 13, 14 and 15 in the auditorium at Penn State Shenango campus. The show has a cast of 50 people and also has special effects. The presentation is sponsored by Miracle Valley Church. Admission is free. Call (724) 962-5400
Animal blessings
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two churches plan to have blessing services for animals in recognition of the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown, will have blessing of animals at 6 p.m. Friday, which is the feast day.
St. John's Episcopal Church will have its blessing at 1 p.m. Oct. 6. A reception with people crackers for the animals will follow.
Parenting panel
BOARDMAN -- St. Charles Church's Christian education commission presents "Parenting, Morality and Your Child, A Round Table Discussion of Issues Facing Parents and Adolescents Today" at 7 p.m. Oct. 8. The event is free. The panel will include a pediatrician, a crisis prevention specialist, a psychiatrist, juvenile diversion officers and a spiritual care director.
