WARREN Trumbull Relays for Life are tops

The Warren and Boardman events usually rank first and second in the state.
WARREN -- Trumbull County's 2002 Relays for Life raised the highest amount in the country for relays in its population bracket.
The four relays conducted in May in Warren, Niles, Liberty and northern Trumbull County raised a combined $773,194, said Al Stabilito, communications and advocacy director for the American Cancer Society.
That earned the county the top spot for relays in counties in the 150,000-to-249,999 population category.
There are 3,300 Relay for Life events throughout the country.
The Warren relay at Warren G. Harding High School's Mollenkopf Stadium raised $481,091, giving it the largest total in Ohio, Stabilito said.
The Niles event raised $98,150.
Liberty, in its first year, raised $89,117, making it one of the largest first-year relays in the state.
The northern Trumbull relay at Lakeview High School in Cortland brought in $98,150.
"Warren's site was the 20th-largest in the country," Stabilito said.
State outcome
Warren and Boardman typically earn the first and second spots in the state for amounts raised, Stabilito said.
Boardman's event raised $318,000 this year.
Stabilito attributed Warren and Trumbull County's large totals to the people involved.
"It's really a community event," he said. "It's the volunteers, the relay board members, community leaders and everyone."
This year's Mahoning County relays garnered $440,000, and Columbiana County brought in $157,000.
That brings the total for the 10 relays in the three-county area to $1,370,194.
