WEATHERSFIELD -- Police are searching for a man who three boys said tried to abduct them.
Township patrolman Jamison Diglaw said 13- and 11-year-old boys and a third child whose age wasn't available were walking to school Wednesday morning when a man in a blue Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra pulled up to them at Union and Depot streets, got out and tried to pull the 11-year-old into the car.
The 13-year-old punched the man in the face, and the boys fled to a nearby warehouse, where they hid until the man left.
The man was described as being black, 6 feet tall and weighing 250-300 pounds, reports said.
Girard schools budget
GIRARD -- The school board has approved temporary appropriations of $20,187,645 for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2003, causing the budget to surpass the $20 million mark for the first time.
The appropriations, which the board revises periodically during the year, are 15 percent above those of last fiscal year, with most of the increase coming from a $3.5 million renovation and expansion project at Prospect Elementary School.
The $3.5 million may not all be spent this fiscal year, said treasurer Mark Bello.
The board also adopted Wednesday a high school course of study of the Mahoning River Project.
Professor fined
GIRARD -- Gary Fry, a Youngstown State University anthropology professor, was found guilty of two charges Wednesday in municipal court.
Judge Michael A. Bernard fined Fry $400 and costs, placed him on a one year's probation, suspended a 180-day jail sentence and ordered him to undergo drug and/or alcohol assessment. He also had to surrender his firearms.
Detective Mike Begeot of the Hubbard Township Police Department said Fry, 62, of Mount Everett Road, Hubbard Township, borrowed a car and failed to return it.
He was originally charged Sept. 9 with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a felony. The charge was reduced to attempted unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
He was also found guilty of having a weapon while intoxicated. The misdemeanor charge was filed Aug. 15.
Assault on officer
WARREN -- A Trumbull County Common Pleas Court jury deliberated about five hours Wednesday before convicting a 20-year-old North Lima man of two counts of assaulting a police officer.
Daniel Gilliam, who has said he is innocent, could face up to three years in prison. Judge John Stuard ordered Gilliam, who had been free on a $3,500 bond, to be taken to the jail pending sentencing.
Prosecutors said Gilliam got into an argument with his parents, who came to get him at a friend's home on Layer Road in Warren Township on Dec. 29.
A patrol officer, who was in the neighborhood because of recent burglaries, saw the argument and stopped, and Gilliam assaulted him.
MVSD OKs pact
NILES -- Directors for the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District approved a one-year contract for its chief engineer.
David G. Tabak was awarded a 4 percent increase in his annual salary under the new contract, which runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2003. His salary is now $71,943.
