Food bank gets grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Second Harvest Foodbank received a $5,000 grant from the Youngstown Foundation for purchase of warehouse equipment and supplies. Second Harvest provides food to 200 member agencies that feed hungry people in Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
ACTION receives grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods announced Tuesday it has received a $35,000 grant from the National Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The Rev. Joseph Fata, chairman of ACTION's clergy caucus, said the grant will help pay for the administrative and other costs of ACTION's programs.
Also, the annual public meeting, titled "Lead in faith, follow in action," is set for 3:30-5 p.m. Oct. 27 at Stambaugh Auditorium on Fifth Avenue. The group is a coalition of Catholic and non-Catholic urban and suburban congregations that work on a variety of issues.
Con artists get $120
CANFIELD -- Two quick-change artists managed to walk off with $120 from the Sheetz gas station on Boardman-Canfield Road around 7 p.m. Tuesday. The men kept the clerk busy exchanging bills for smaller and larger amounts, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. A count of the cash drawer revealed the total amount missing.
Patio furniture stolen
CANFIELD -- Patio furniture worth $550 is missing from a porch near the golf course at Tippecanoe Country Club on Tippecanoe Road. Theft of the brown furniture was discovered Tuesday, according to a Mahoning County sheriff's report.
Animals will be blessed
AUSTINTOWN -- A blessing of animals will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 near the Rose Lake Building at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, corner of Kirk and South Raccoon Roads. Oct. 4 is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. The church invites people to bring their animals.
Cruisin' by the Lake
CORTLAND -- The Sept. 15 Cruisin' by the Lake cruise-in postponed by inclement weather has been rescheduled for Oct. 6. The car show takes place from noon to 4 p.m. at the state park boat launch on state Route 88 on the east shore of Mosquito Lake. Live entertainment begins at 2:45 p.m. The event includes classic cars, food, music, raffles and Danny G's Memories of Elvis Tribute. Proceeds benefit Friends of Mecca Community Park for continued park development.
Septic tank reminders
NORTH JACKSON -- The Mahoning County Board of Health is sending reminders to about 900 Jackson and Milton Township residents that having their septic tanks pumped can save them money. Health officials say septic tanks should be pumped at regular intervals depending on household size and water usage. Homeowners will receive pumping interval recommendations and a list of licensed pumpers. For example, a four-person household with a 1,000 gallon septic tank should have the tank pumped every three years.
ACCESS board meetings
CANFIELD -- The regular board meetings of the ACCESS Council of Government will be at 9 a.m. the second Friday of each month at 425 W. Main Street. Any changes to meeting dates will be posted on the bulletin board in the front entrance at ACCESS.
