Boys pays for snackswith counterfeit $20
SALEM -- Police are investigating a report that a boy paid a local store with a counterfeit bill.
Investigators were called to Sparkle Market, 423 S. Lundy Ave., Monday evening after cashiers there reported receiving a $20 counterfeit bill.
Store employees say the bill was used by a boy between 7 and 10 years old, who used it to buy pop, chips and snack cakes.
Car-school bus crash results in minor injuries
GREEN -- Four people were treated for minor injuries at Salem Community Hospital after a collision between a West Branch school bus and a car Monday afternoon at state Routes 62 and 165.
In the 2:30 p.m. accident, the car, driven by Dee Fletcher, 39, of Carey Road, Salem, with a 13-year-old boy as a passenger, was northbound on 62 when it collided in the intersection with the school bus.
The bus was driven by Charles Pelley, 62, of North 15th Street, Sebring, who was westbound on 165 with just one passenger -- a 10-year-old boy.
The bus went off the right side of the road, hitting a utility pole. No charges were filed. Witnesses gave conflicting reports as to how the accident happened, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Courses for diabetics
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- "Dining with Diabetes," a series of three courses designed to help diabetics make appropriate food choices, will be offered by the Penn State Extension in Lawrence County.
Classes will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 3, 10 and 17 at the extension office in the third floor of the county government center. Instructor Janice Roman will discuss how to cook with artificial sweeteners, low-fat products and herbs and spices.
Participants will receive recipe booklets, watch cooking demonstrations and taste foods made with less fat, sugar and salt.

Income tax forum
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana village schools board of education will have a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to provide a public forum on the district's 1 percent income tax on the November ballot. The meeting will be at Joshua Dixon Elementary.
High school band showset at Firestone Park
COLUMBIANA -- A high school band show featuring Wellsville, Sebring, Crestview, Beaver, Leetonia and Columbiana high school bands will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Firestone Park, Columbiana.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
The host, Columbiana High's band, recently received top honors in its division at the 27th annual Music in Motion competition at Louisville High School.
Nominations soughtfor school hall of fame
EAST PALESTINE -- Nomination forms are available in Superintendent Jeff Richardson's office for the second class of the East Palestine City School District Distinguished Hall of Fame. New members will be inducted in February 2003.
The nomination is Oct. 1.
4 hurt in crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old girl did heavy damage to the front of a 1987 Buick Century when she lost control and it plowed into a utility pole in the 600 block of West Warren Avenue about 10 p.m. Monday, reports show.
The driver, of Parkwood Avenue, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Two teenage boys in the car also were taken to the hospital for treatment, and an 11-year-old boy suffered a leg fracture.
Cruisin' by the Lakerescheduled for Oct. 6
CORTLAND -- The Sept. 15 Cruisin' by the Lake cruise-in postponed by inclement weather has been rescheduled for Oct. 6.
The car show takes place from noon to 4 p.m. at the state park boat launch on state Route 88 on the east shore of Mosquito Lake.
