Bank One robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bank One at 2900 Market St. was held up about 9:50 a.m. today. A white man wearing dark pants, baseball cap and a white scarf on his face was seen running near Hylda Avenue, then Indianola Avenue. The money bag exploded, and cash, covered with dye, spilled out. Police set up a perimeter and called in a K-9 unit to look for him. The man removed his shirt to wipe dye from his hands, police said. The search was continuing late this morning.
Collision injures 4
GREEN -- Four people were treated for minor injuries at Salem Community Hospital after a collision between a West Branch school bus and a car Monday afternoon at state Routes 62 and 165. In the 2:30 p.m. accident, the car, driven by Dee Fletcher, 39, of Carey Road, Salem, with a 13-year-old boy as a passenger, was northbound on Route 62 when it collided in the intersection with the school bus. The bus was driven by Charles Pelley, 62, of North 15th Street, Sebring, who was westbound on Route 165 with just one passenger -- a 10-year-old boy. The bus went off the right side of the road, hitting a utility pole. No charges were filed. Witnesses gave conflicting reports as to how the accident happened, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Hit with pepper spray
YOUNGSTOWN -- A deputy used pepper spray on a 14-year-old boy who was fighting with detention personnel about 11:30 p.m. Monday at the juvenile justice center. The boy, incarcerated on a probation violation, was sprayed after being told three times to quit fighting, the deputy reported.
Tools reported stolen
CANFIELD -- Padlocks were cut to gain entry to a trailer owned by R. Clark Construction parked in the 3300 block of Linden Place. Tools worth about $5,000 were taken from the trailer sometime over the weekend, according to the sheriff's department.
4 injured in crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old girl did heavy damage to the front of a 1987 Buick Century when she lost control and it struck a utility pole in the 600 block of West Warren Avenue about 10 p.m. Monday, reports show. The driver, of Parkwood Avenue, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Two teenage boys in the car also were taken to the hospital for treatment, and an 11-year-old boy suffered a leg fracture.
Search turns up drugs
POLAND -- A search warrant used at 4649 New Castle Road resulted in the seizure of cocaine and a charge of drug trafficking against Michael Moore, 48, said Greg McCoy, a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA, assisted by Poland Township police, the Mahoning Valley Drug Task Force, Youngstown police and Mahoning County Sheriff's Department, also searched the Riverview Lounge on Water Street in Lowellville, McCoy said. Nothing was found at the bar, of which Moore is a co-owner, McCoy said. The searches took place Friday evening. Moore is free on $50,000 bond.
Work on fire station
CANFIELD -- Township trustees voted 2-1 Monday to seek bids for renovation and expansion of the fire station on Messerly Road in anticipation of 24-hour staffing there and for construction of a salt storage dome at the adjacent road department. The bids will be opened at 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., respectively, on Oct. 11 at the township hall. Trustees plan to award contracts at their 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15 meeting. Trustees Paul F. Moracco and William D. Reese voted in favor of advertising for the bids, but Trustee Judy M. Bayus dissented, saying she hadn't seen the architectural plans for the fire station work and she favored including a sheriff's substation in the fire station renovation and expansion.
Theft at cemetery
COITSVILLE -- A Girard woman who had planted flowers at her parents' graves at St. John's Cemetery told police Sunday that when she returned to her car she noticed the passenger side window had been broken out and her purse stolen. The woman said two men in a dark car entered the cemetery then wandered around, making her feel uncomfortable. The purse contained a cell phone, $500 and credit cards, she told police.
