Man found dead
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating the death of a man who was found shot in the head Saturday night on the South Side. They were not releasing the man's name pending notification of his family.
The man's daughter found his body on the second floor of a Parkview Avenue home around 6:30 p.m.
Man suffers burns
STRUTHERS -- Firefighters found a badly burned 33-year-old man lying in front of a burning home on Fourth Street early Saturday.
Andrew Strickland was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in serious condition with second- and third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body and a broken rib.
Firefighters said they received a call around 1:06 a.m. that a man had jumped from an upstairs window of a burning home at 510 Fourth Street. Strickland was unconscious and not breathing when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters resuscitated Strickland and extinguished the fire. Neighbors said there were three children in the home, but none were found.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Church's anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reed's Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church will observe its 81st anniversary at 4 p.m. today.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Beryle Whitten, the founder of Spiritual Growth Ministries of Cleveland. She has focused on topics that include stress management, Christians being overweight and self-esteem, and has given talks in north and south America and Africa.
Rearing healthy kids
AUSTINTOWN -- Ohio first lady Hope Taft will be at Rulli Brothers market on Kirk Road in Austintown at 1 p.m. Tuesday as part of "Ohio Parents Week."
Each night of this week is being dedicated to activities that contribute to parents' abilities to rear healthy children. Monday's activity is Family Meal Night, meant to honor and encourage the tradition of families gathering for the evening meal.
New research from Columbia University indicates that the more kids eat meals with their parents, the less likely they are to engage in negative behavior such as smoking or underage drinking.
During Tuesday's event, Ohio's first lady will help prepare lunch for local children and discuss family and nutrition.
Prison funding protest
LEAVITTSBURG -- Members of the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association Local 11 are expected to protest state cuts in prison funding at 10 a.m. Monday in front of the Trumbull Correctional Institution on Burnett Road.
The union represents employees at the institution. The employees say state cuts in funding to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections threaten the safety of the institution and community.
Hassan to sign books
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Author E.K. Hassan will sign copies of his newest book, "Jackie's Boys," at the New Castle Library from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The book is the story of a family from immigrant parents who overcome insurmountable odds to share in the American dream. Copies of the books will be available for purchase.
