CITY SERIES McElroy scores 4 to power Chaney

The Cowboys scored on their first four possessions, and led Wilson 40-0 at the half.

YOUNGSTOWN -- In the first game of a City Series doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium, defending champion Chaney High scored early and often on its way to a 53-0 victory over Woodrow Wilson.
Chaney (3-2, 1-0), with three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, took a 40-0 halftime lead. Senior tailback Ed McElroy scored four touchdowns, bringing his season total to 12, as he ran for 142 yards on nine carries.
McElroy has 813 yards on 75 carries for the season.
Four early scores
The Cowboys scored on their first four possessions, with a 39-yard pass from junior quarterback Justin Hood to McElroy being the initial tally with the game just 2 minutes, 48 seconds old.
McElroy's other three scores were on runs of 35, 7 and 59 yards.
"Our line executed well with holes and plenty of room always there for me," said McElroy. "We needed this win to give us momentum for next week's game."
The Cowboys play at Poland Friday night.
Hood was 2-for-2 for 59 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 38 yards on three runs for another score.
"Our people up front worked hard," said Hood. "The opening scoring pass definitely set the tone for this game."
Wilson contained
Wilson was held to only one first down, which it didn't get until the last five minutes of the third quarter. Their biggest gain of the game was a 48-yard run by quarterback Carlton Sims, taking the Redmen to the Chaney 21. Wilson later got to the Chaney 12, but turned the ball over on downs.
Chaney picked off three passes, with junior Andrew Bowell taking one back 10 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Juniors Chris Eskew and Mike Hall also scored on runs of 5 and 12 yards, combining for 88 of Chaney's 330 yards on the ground.
Wilson had only 65 total yards offensively, with Sims running for 50 on three carries.
Ron Berdis, the coach of the Cowboys said, "We were fortunate to have our kids take control of the game early, so we were able to get a lot of people playing time."
Chaney had 10 different ball carriers.
"Give Wilson credit, they played hard and never quit against some tough odds."
Wilson coach Dan DiGiacomo said, "Chaney is a very good team that is well-coached with a lot of good athletes, who do a lot of things well."
